The Journey

Muckleford Departure

The cylinder drain cocks are open as J549 departs from Muckleford station.

Uphill Climb

J549 steaming upgrade through the Muckleford forest. The fireman has increased the flow of oil to the firebox to provide more steam for the climb, hence the black smoke.

Locomotives

J549

J549 is an oil-burning freight locomotive, with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement.  It was built by Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire in 1954 for the Victorian Government Railways.

K160

K160 is a coal-burning freight locomotive with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement.  It was built by the Victorian Railways in 1940, and retired in 1977 after several years of shunting at the Bendigo railway workshops.  K160 has been restored to working order but unfortunately hasn't been in steam when I have visited :-(

K157

K157 is of the same design as K160, but has yet to be restored.  It is displayed in the goods yard at Maldon.

D3 646

D3 646 is a 4-6-0 passenger locomotive, built by the Victorian Railways in 1905.  It was retired in 1967 and preserved outside Maryborough railway station for many years before being acquired by the Victorian Goldfields Railway.  It now awaits restoration to working order.

E 371

E371 is a 0-6-2 tank locomotive built by David Munro & Co, Melbourne in 1892, originally for hauling Melbourne suburban trains. Following electrification of the Melbourne suburban system, it was rebuilt for shunting service and used in this capacity until retired in 1972.

T345

T345 is a diesel-electric Bo-Bo locomotive, built by Clyde Engineering in 1956 and used on Victorian country branch lines prior to preservation.

F 212

Diesel-hydraulic shunter F212 (0-6-0) in the depot at Maldon.  UK railway enthusiasts will instantly recognise a copy of the British Railways class 08!
