Modifying Images

This picture is 200 X 197 pixels.

When viewed in 'Paintshop Pro'
it is 115.4 KB.

When the file is closed it is compressed.
Select it on the drive and it will
show as only 10.4KB!

The original scan 
was twice the size physically
and several megabytes
in disk space (c. 3000KB).


This is a THUMBNAIL.
Creating tiny versions is useful 
if you want to keep the bigger size.
You click on the thumbnail to bring up 
the bigger version.

  1. open ‘Paintshop Pro’ 
  2. open the picture to modify
  3. move the mouse over the graphic
  4. check size in the bottom right corner of the screen
  5. size should be under 500KB

  6. better at around 100KB or less 
    (but depends on intended use)
  7. look at ratio (shows in blue bar at top of picture)
    • eg 1:4 Change to 1:1 to see the REAL size
    • ratio can be changed in Control Panel 

    • when ZOOM tool is selected on the side
    • if Control Panel not showing...
    • click on VIEW then TOOLBARS then CONTROL PANEL
    • OR click on the button at the top 'Toggle Control Panel'
  8. if the real size is not appropriate....
  9. click on IMAGE menu then RESIZE
  10. type, say, 400 (see how this looks and adjust to your needs)
  11. note: automatically adjusts the other size
  12. if printing in Black and White then also change to greyscales...
  13. click on COLORS then GREYSCALES
  14. if NOT HAPPY with changes...
  15. close the file, DON’T SAVE and reopen
  16. if changes to size and colour are suitable... 
  17. click FILE then SAVE AS 
  18. type a new filename (if want to keep original picture)
  19. change file type to JPEG <OK>
  20. check size in bottom right corner, as before
