RHINO TURTLE
|
Stoneware clay. Coloured slip, gold lustre glaze, opal lustre.
275mm high

| White rhino females, when threatened with danger, stand rump to rump with
their young beneath them, horns facing outwards towards oncoming danger. This
form, while useful in the face of natural predators, does nothing to protect
them from poachers or the loss of their habitat. This reminded me of the Roman
"turtle" military formation, where arrows were shot from behind
soldiers with large shields. Roman civilisation is long gone and the white
rhinos are not far behind. The shape of the rhino turtle also reminds me of a
dinosaur. |
