Silvia
"An Open Relationship" is a real challenge for Silvia Schindler
23-year old Silvia Schindler playing Antonia in the opening of "An Open Relationhip" at the Burgbühne theatre. It gets exciting: the role of the finally self-assured woman hardly suits this quiet lady from Renchen.

Oberkirch. Something like No! - but with three or even five exclamation marks - was probably what Silvia Schindler said when she read the part in "An Open Relationhip" by Dario Fo and his wife Franca Rame which she was to play.
Already in the past year, Burgbühne theatre director Johanna Graupe had carefully warned the 23-year-old: "I've got something heavy lined up for you."
And that was what Silvia Schindler really thought when the director unveiled her plans. "I'll play anything, but never that", was what she first thought. But Johanna Graupe persuaded her - and also persuaded her not to wear a wig on stage.

First leading part

Nevertheless, Silvia Schindler still sees the role of Antonia, her first leading part at the Burgbühne, as a challenge. "I have to find my way into it, get out of myself and lose aggressions", she admits.
Aggression? Scarcely, the word associated with Silvia Schindler, when she stands there as an angel-curled blonde and says - a little too softly: - "I have never done that" (referring to giving an interview to a newspaper). And no-one would assume anything of the man-eater in this quiet lady from Renchen as she stands there for a photo-shoot with her arms militarily straight down her trouser

seams, taking great care that the crucifix on the chain tumbles visibly over her pullover. One would automatically assume that she was the type who studiously sat in the back row at school - And possibly also the type that decays in depression like the Antonia that she plays.
But that she seeks herself a lover, like Antonia - that must become a really exciting transformation on the stage. Attractive also for the performer herself: "That is the good thing about the theater," says Silvia Schindler, "One can simply become someone entirely different."

Double Foundations

Seen that way "An Open Relationhip" is just the right thing for her.. A highly successful piece, this two person drama with a built-in double foundation. Since 1984, this boulevard-style but deeper-rooted comedy has been circulating German theatres - and still attracts the audiences in their hordes.
There are at least 25 theatres in Germany in which the public can watch the battle of a married couple: the man who wants to convince his better half Antonia of the advantages of free love, in order to justify his affairs. Until he finally succeeds - and then before sinks into depression because of jealousy, because Antonia finds herself a potent lover
The piece is told to the audience retrospectively as suppressed little lady Antonia becomes mutated into a Vamp.

Successful Production

The Burgbühne had already staged "An Open Relationhip" in 1993. Judged by the size of the audience it was one of their most successful

productions. Arthur Hilberer, has slipped back into his old role as the husband, but director Johanna Graupe had to think of a new Anotonia as the earlier performer Birgit Schmiederer was no longer available.
Silvia Schindler arrived at the Burgbühne three years ago to join in the Musical "Line 1" where they were looking for a singer for the role of the sad, unloved Maria. At the time she was taking singing lessons.
Singing is one of her hobbies, apart to the stage and playing the flute. The young actress who is a trained medical assistant however now begins a two-year education as specialty teacher for art, music and home economy. Another transformation.

Well-behaved so far/Until now fine

Once discovered for the stage, she followed with performances in "Othello may not die" and in "My friend Harvey". There she played the daughter and the niece; well-behaved, blonde, sweet young girls. Parts which would not have been attributed to her.
"Silvia as an Antonia, that is on the other hand a also good role" confirms Director Johanna Graupe, "You just have get out its nasty side. But then she can. The role also requires something seductive - and she just brings it with her".
Forget Silvia Schindler's crucifix on the stage.
