About Door in the Wall

Early publicity shotDoor in the Wall has evolved into one of Sydney's most exciting vocal ensembles. The group's concerts and shows are renowned for taking audiences on surprising journeys.

Our repertoire covers a multitude of genres, from pop and jazz standards to opera choruses, contemporary Australian song and world music. The music is mostly arranged by Gareth Chan, Tim Graham, and Sally Whitwell. These arrangements are put together into concerts that reinterpret the familiar in a uniquely moving and thought provoking way.

Door in the Wall has produced several shows since our inception five years ago, including "Moondance" a celebration of the winter solstice, "bRAVE" a nod to 30 years of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and most recently "Dance! (Thankfully they can sing)" a collection of songs about dancing, literally and figuratively. We formed the chorus of "The Bugger's Opera Company" directed by Sally Whitwell, with soprano soloist Nadia Piave, and performed two sellout Mardi Gras Festival shows "The Bugger's Opera" and "Copacabugger".

Door in the Wall performed at the City of Sydney New Years Eve 2008-2009, televised on Channel 10 and recently wowed audiences at the Blackheath Choir Festival in August 2009.

What the audiences are saying

"It's rare to go to a concert that is as clever, entertaining and fun!"
"I have been to three shows now and all have been really different and just fantastic"
"The memory... still gives me chills. It was hauntingly beautiful"

History of Door in the Wall

Publicity shot for 'Dance'We met through our involvement with the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir where we developed friendships and our love of singing a wide variety of music. We total around 20 people as at any one time our membership is a little fluid, and not all of us sing every gig. The flexibility of the group is one of the things that we enjoy, as we all have busy lives.

Our beginnings as an ensemble started as a small group to sing at one of our member’s friend’s weddings. We liked just getting together for a one off event, and liked even more the sound we made as a group. Over time more of us joined the group, to what we have today.

You may be wondering what the name, 'Door in the Wall', refers to? It isn’t a random choice; not long after we started to meet regularly to sing together we decided that we should find a name. At the time we were meeting in the lounge room of one our members and his house is literally accessed through a door in the wall from a main street in inner city Sydney. Hence, 'Door in the Wall' was chosen.
