IC+ Hexagram formats

In this link the traditional order and numbering system is used for all hexagram references. It is supplamentary to the hexagram table.

In IC+ the line yin/yang values are estimated percentages that reflect the flow from raw to refined. In the example below, a trigram of pure yang is not an even distribution but 'spread out' through the levels, diminishing in quantity but improving in quality.

            Trigram        Hexagram
              13.25 ------  1.565
              27.75 ------  3.125
              55.00 ------  6.250
                    ------ 12.500
                    ------ 24.000
                    ------ 51.000

For example, within the hexagram called Seeding (44) we have the following values:

                    ------ 1.565% yang
                    ------ 3.125% yang
                    ------ 6.250% yang
                    ------ 12.50% yang
                    ------ 24.00% yang
                    --  -- 51.00% yin

     Overall, this hexagram is 51% yin and 49% yang.

PATHS OF REFINEMENT.

In the analysis of each hexagram, since line 6 is close to the finished product, one finds that the hexagram associated with the line, as the line changes (transformation), is close in meaning to the actual meaning of the whole hexagram (the finished product). This suggests that the line hexagrams of influence are infact paired, and it is the pair meaning, derived from the group research, that influences the line position. This appears to be so, as shown below, where there seems to be a close correlation between the meaning of the 6th position and the 'final' meaning of the whole hexagram.

For example, processing means converting the unchanged line(raw) into a changed line (refinement). For hexagram 01 this involves the following steps:

                                   Generic line meanings for hex 01
                                     (derived from hexagram groups)

          15 --> 10  (top - Refined)       Seek Balance
          07 --> 13                        Likemindedness
          24 --> 44                        Knowing (not inn).
          23 --> 43                        Self supportive
          08 --> 14                        Need Management
      Raw 16 --> 09 Refined (base - Raw) No power but firming

This implies that each hexagram has a raw form and a refined form. Since the raw form is what we start with then it suggests a process bias over the end form being form bias. In the above example the process of 16 is enthusiasm and this contracts to 09, small gains. On the other hand, in hexagram 2 for the same position we go from the process of 09 which is perseverance (hard work) which expands into 16 which is developed foresight and enthusiasm.

This refinement is further extended when we realize that the influence of the changing 6th line on the hexagram name is infact a pattern throughout the development of the entire hexagram. Therefore in position 1, hex 09 is to the unchanging line 2 (hexagram 08) what the changing line 6 (hexagram 10) is to the hexagram itself. This being the case, is it possible to link hexagrams together where the raw form of position 1 links backwards to another hexagram as its source? From the above example we can create the following list:

   * --> 16 --> 09 --> 08 --> 14 --> 23 --> 43 --> 24 --> 44 --> 07
     --> 13 --> 15 --> 10 --> 01. (--> *)

The influencial hexagrams are highlighted. In this concept, 9 leads into 8, as 14 leads into 23. The path from 8 to 14 is of the same type and not a position change.

In the IC+ extensions, the hexagram names have been created using words ending in 'ing'. This reflects the process bias within the I Ching system. (As is done in the ERANOS publication). In numbering, each hexagram has it's traditional number followed by brackets containing the binary number and the position number in the proposed King Wen sequence. The trigrams have been interpreted dependent on their position, either OUTER or INNER.

Trigram                       INNER               OUTER

THE HEXAGRAMS AND THEIR ATTRIBUTES SUMMARIZED.

Each IC+ extension lists the hexagram together with the hexagram influences on line change. Note that these are NOT the overall contextual lines discussed elsewhere; these are the hexagram pairs that the contextuals summarize. The format does allow the user to determine which two hexagrams any hexagram summarizes. This is done by looking at the hexagram pair for line 6 (top line). For example, hexagram 01, when in it's contextual form, summarizes the interaction from 15 to 10. For the moment, this data is presented in PREformatted mode.
