Motivations 05 <--> 09

In the transition from hexagram 05, the act of waiting, serving one's dues and waiting for the correct moment, to hexagram 09, manifesting the process of acquiring/making small gains with the intent of developing influence, the motivation is described by hexagram 44, the need for an encounter, seduction/persuasion.

Hexagram 09 in its King Wen form manifests the slow accumulation of goods etc that can be used to stand upon and so be noticed. The act of being noticed will force an encounter of some sort and so the process satisfies the motive. Hexagram 09 in its Fu Hsi form manifests over accumulation in that it does not guarantee recognition and there is a touch of 'little minds' about it all.

The ERANOS translation of hexagram 09 is:

"HSIAO CH'U - HSIAO : little, common, unimportant; adapting to what crosses your path; ability to move in harmonious relation to the vicissitudes of life...

CH'U : hoard, gather, retain, herd together; control, restrain; domesticate, tame, train; raise, feed, sustain, bring up. The ideogram: field and black, fertile black soil good for pastures, accumulated through retaining silt."

The ERANOS translation of the motivational hexagram, 44, is:

"KOU : intense, driven encounter, at once transitory and enduring, that is the reflection of primal yin and yang; meet, encounter, copulate; mating animals; magnatism, gravity; to be gripped by impersonal forces."

The reverse process, from 09 to 05 is motivated by hexagram 06, compromise (conflict). Hexagram 05 manifests a state of constructed waiting, of planned waiting where current circumstances are no conducive to one taking any sort of action other than waiting for things to pass and the right moment to appear. This manifests the motive of compromise where we shift from attempts to make small gains to wait.

Hexagram 05 in its Fu Hsi form manifests serving. We have waited so long that we have lost our goal and now serve. In this context our prayers for change have become just prayers, they have lost their purpose, the original intent being a compromise. In this sense we have overcompromised and are suffering accordingly asking 'what happened!?'.

The ERANOS translation of hexagram 05 is:

"HSU : take care of, look out for, serve; turn your mind to what is necessary; wait, await, wait on; hesitate, doubt; obstinate, fixed. The ideogram: rain and stop, compelled to wait, or rain and origin, providing what is needed"

The ERANOS translation of the motivational hexagram 06 is:

"SUNG : dispute, plead in court, contend before a ruler, demand justice; wrangles, quarrels, litigation. The ideogram: words and public, public disputation."
