Due to the presence of BOTH/AND states in this hexagram's trichotomous form, this hexagram can share context with hexagrams 03, 04, and 27.

At all times, the path into hexagram 29 is that of 59 - dispersing, clearing away, dispel illusions. What this implies is that the change of any hexagram into 29 is forced to go through the characteristics of 59
At all times the path out of hexagram 29 is the opposite of the path in - in this case the path described by 55 - abundance, full. Thus the process of hexagram 29 changing into any other hexagram has to pass through hexagram 55 to start.
Hexagram 29 finds it's roots in hexagram 61, Yielding, with the emphasis on a hard exterior and a soft yielding center developing into containment. Note that I, like Karcher(1995), have emphasized the intentional use of the term 'Hsi' in the name for hexagram 29. This favours the interpretation of 29 to include 'tradition' in the form of learning-by-rote which is a social form of establishing control (the hard exterior, where soft values become hard and 'objective')
As we progress towards the refined point at the top of the hexagram, so we pass through ever-improving states, the description of which is given by the order of contextual hexagrams. The final contextual state, prior to text and context becoming 'one', is described by the line 5 influence - hexagram 04, masking.
For hexagram 29, the contextual hexagrams sequence from the base line through to the top is:
At a finer level of analysis, the contextual hexagrams encapsulate the behaviour of a hexagram pair - where one is connected to the unchanging line and the other to the line when it changes. These pairs are shown below, with The layout format described here
29 (19,55) Securing, Containing
With containment comes overcoming(control).
