We are often asked? "where does the name "The Stillroom" come from?"

In Elizabethan times, it fell to the lady of the house to act as doctor, nurse, pharmacist, perfumer and cook as well as perform her other duties as wife and mother. With all these responsibilities, the mistress of the household kept a special room, the stillroom, in which temperature and humidity were controlled as best they could be in those times and, of course, where she kept her still.

In this special room, she prepared and stored all her soaps, candles, medicines, unguents, powders and perfumes. It was also the place where she collected and dried the herbs and stored the precious spices used in her cooking. All home recipes (in those days called receipts) were carefully preserved to be passed from one generation to the next.

In those times lavender was placed amongst the bed linen to freshen it and protect it from insect attack. Pomanders (oranges stuck with cloves and cured in orris root powder) did the same when placed amongst clothes.

The Stillroom is carrying on this tradition of utilising the natural ingredients available to us to better our home lives.

The Stillroom started out in the late 80’s as a small craft/hobby enterprise run from home by an ex-schoolteacher. Her interest in the use of herbs and aromatherapy led to the development of the clothing protector as an alternative to the toxic chemicals used in insect repelling products.
