For Immediate Release
MOTLEY CRUE'S "NEW TATTOO"
JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA TOUR TO FEATURE HOLE'S DRUMMER SAMANTHA MALONEY
Crüe DRUMMER RANDY CASTILLO,
ON HEALTH HIATUS, WILL RETURN NEXT YEAR.
LOS ANGELES, CA (September 28, 2000)
Mötley Crüe announced today that Hole
Drummer Samantha Maloney will continue handling drumming
responsibilities for the Crüe on their November "New Tattoo"
Japanese/Australian Tour. Maloney was universally well received by fans
& critics alike during this summer's North American "Maximum Rock"
Tour, filling in for Crüe drummer Randy Castillo as he recovered from
stomach surgery. As previously reported, Randy Castillo will take the
remainder of 2000 off for health reasons and will re-join the band in
2001.

Well I'm sure Randy is really hurting
by this, but I guess he's being safe than sorry. We have to remember
that he almost lost his life from this ailment earlier this year (read
all about it here), so he wouldn't want to
take any chances of doing further damage to his mending body. Whilst he
is playing the occasional gig for his flamenco band, Azul, the rigors
of a Crüe show and life on the road for a month is a different ball
game altogether. I sent him an email telling him to "keep his chin up."
We were really looking forward to getting crazy together on this tour.
Those
that attended any of the Australian 'Big Day Out' festivals in February
1999, have seen Sam drum with 'Hole' and would know that she is a great
player and a hard hitter. She grew up listening to hard rock in the
late '80s and her favourite drummer is the Crüe's own Tommy Lee, with
original GNR skinsman Steve Adler, and Janes Addiction's Stephen
Perkins following. Samantha's nickname is 'Sammy Lee' for these reasons.
The above press release is correct.
The Crüeheads that caught those US shows this year with her behind the
kit, certainly did receive her well. Many of them stated that she
should become the permanent Crüe drummer. That doesn't sit with me
well, considering Randy's unfortunate situation. I'd prefer to see
Randy recover and get back behind his stool as soon as possible.
Sam was recently asked in an online
chat session that if Mötley asked her to be a permanent member of
Mötley would she stay? Sam's response was, "That's a very good
question. I don't know what my answer would be... I would be very
tempted but I already miss my band Hole...just being asked that
question would be a total honor...but I don't know what my answer would
be."
So, what's done is done. Randy will
continue to recuperate while Samantha will tour Japan and Australia
with Mötley Crüe. Whether you think it's good or bad, you will have
your own opinions, but let's make this as positive as can be. Let's try
and spread the word to as many Hole fans as possible and persuade them
to attend these Crüe shows as well. Think about how you can reach them,
and let them know that their girl is on the way to rock their asses -
Crüe style!
Rock on
