Off-Leash Dog Parks in the Southern Suburbs of Sydney

Including the Local Government areas of Bankstown, Canterbury, Hurstville, Kogarah, Rockdale and Sutherland

Bankstown

Bankstown did not reply to my 1998 letter but in 2001 they have a good website where information can now be checked ... direct ...

There is one leash-free area and it's at Vale of Ah, Milperra - entry via Auld Avenue (UBD 270 G7) ... there is a map on the Council website.

The website also has a picture of the most gorgeous doggy-do bin I have ever seen ... I wouldn't pinch their picture but I will be going to take my own picture of one!  According to the website, the bins are at Kelso Park, Monash Reserve, Lambeth Park, Salt Pan Creek, Virginius Reserve, Maluga Reserve, Mirrambeena Regional Park, Amour Park and the off-leash area at Vale of Ah.

Canterbury

In 1998 and still in 2001 Canterbury Council has just one off-leash park off Glamis and Armitree Streets in Kingsgrove (UBD 273 G10).  However they do have a reasonable  website and the currency (and perhaps future improvement) of this information can be checked ... direct ...

Hurstville

In 1998 in Hurstville there were no off-leash areas.  All other areas were leashed areas except for two prohibited areas which are Ruby Wing Reserve in Mortdale and Hurstville Golf Course in Peakhurst.

Now, of course, the Companion Animals Act requires at least one off-leash area to be available at all times.  I hope to receive a reply to my e-mail from Hurstville soon.

Kogarah

As of 2001 there are three off-leash parks in Kogarah - information received by e-mail on 31st January 2001 ...

Moore Reserve which is 24 hours Monday to Friday
Moore Park which is a full-time off-leash area.
There is also the area between Carrs Park Bowling Club and Canal which is also full-time

This is an improvement on 1998 when Kogarah had no areas where dogs were permitted off-leash.  Dogs could only be 'exercised' on a leash in Kogarah.  Their 1998 letter did also state that the council had actually attempted to introduce leash-free areas in the past but has met with opposition from local residents.  Now, of course, the Companion Animals Act requires at least one off-leash area to be available at all times.  Kogarah Council has a good website but still does not list the off-leash areas on it.

Rockdale

In 1998 Rockdale had two leash free areas and three prohibited areas (Rockdale Park, the beachfront adjacent to Botany Bay and the wetlands area from Riverine Park to South Barton Park).  All other parks and walkways permitted leashed dogs.  The off-leash areas were:

Rear of Colson Crescent in Monterey (UBD 294 M6)
Rear of Napoleon Street in Sans Souci between Alice Street and Russell Avenue (which I could find because Alice Street does not seem to intersect with Napoleon Street)

I have e-mailed Rockdale Council and hope for an update soon.

Sutherland

Sutherland did not reply to my 1998 letter.  In 2001 there are very promising developments.  Their website includes a link to an Acrobat Image of their off-leash brochure ... unfortunately ... it is almost illegible.  I could not get any details from it but, from the map, there would appear to be several existing and proposed off-leash areas including some proposed dog-swimming areas!  Very promising.  I shall chase down a hard-copy of that brochure.  Meanwhile ... perhaps your eyesight is better than mine ... try it direct ... if you have an Acrobat Reader.

The information in these pages comes directly from the councils concerned, however, it can only be considered current on the day it is written.  Always, always look for the signs in every park you visit.  If the rules have changed, these signs take precedence over anything written in this site.  If you do discover changes, please e-bark me immediately!

Just a final few words ...

Always remember that even in off-leash areas all dogs must still be under effective control and must not leave any deposits.  Please make sure that your dog - especially your puppy - is fully up-to-date with all their vaccinations before going to any parks.  Our friend Leelou, the Rottweiler, contracted Parvo Virus as a puppy shortly after a park visit - though, of course, she could have picked it up anywhere.  She has recovered brilliantly but not every puppy is so lucky.  Ticks are also becoming more common in the  Sydney Metropolitan Area.  Please ask your vet for advice.
