Off-Leash Dog Parks in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney

Including the Local Government Areas of Hornsby, Hunters Hill, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman, North Sydney, Pittwater, Ryde, Warringah and Willoughby

Hornsby

In 1998 Hornsby Council advised me of one leash free area at Rofe Park, Galston Road in Hornsby Heights ... this area being fully fenced and a doggy-do bin is provided.  All other areas could be accessed by leashed dogs with the usual restrictions - not within 10 metres of playgrounds or food areas, not on organised sporting fields etc.

Hornsby Council was then investigating more off-leash areas.  We are looking forward to their reply to our 2001 query - I filled in a feedback form on their website.

Hunters Hill

In 1998 there were three off-leash areas in Hunters Hill ... including Clarkes Point Reserve which is featured on my very front page!
Clarkes Point Reserve - Weekdays all day and Weekends till 9am - this reserve includes the opportunity for a swim - depending on how you feel about the state of the harbour at the time ... (UBD 5 L11)
Lower Gladesville Reserve on weekdays (UBD 214 H13)
Tarban Creek Reserve (pictured left) between Manning Road and Gladesville Reserve at the posted hours.  Tarban Creek has some steep grassy slopes for exercising and ball chasing! (UBD 213 G10)

ClarkesPtLO.jpg (64072 bytes)

This picture was taken in September 1998 near Clarke's Point Reserve in the Hunters Hill Council Area.  The Lookout is reached through a remnant bush area.  According to the sign, dogs are allowed here but only on a leash.  The leash free area is in Clarke's Point Reserve proper - as signposted.  There is a good view of the Parramatta River.

For the update, I have e-mailed Hunters Hill Council and await a reply.

Ku-ring-gai

I have e-mailed Ku-ring-gai Council and await a reply.  Their site said they had 12 off-leash areas but gave no details.  They did, however, have exactly 12 in 1998 ...  (but always check that it is up-to-date)
Hyndes Park, West Lindfield - look for the signs for the right spot (UBD 194 P6)
Killara Park, Killara away from the sports fields - look for the signs (UBD 175 E9)
Ku-ring-gai Bicentennial Park, West Pymble (UBD 174 E11)
Mitchell Crescent Reserve, Turrumurra in the northern corner (UBD 153 N16)
Leuna Avenue Reserve off Leuna and Morona Avenues, Wahroonga - in the open area east of the tennis courts (UBD 173 H3)
Two areas in a reserve off Esk Street, North Wahroonga (UBD 154 G1)
Karuah Park, Turramurra between the avenue & Lovers Jump Creek (UBD 154 D11)
Sandakan Memorial Reserve off Du Faur Street, North Turramurra - a fenced grassed area (UBD 134 L12)
Kent Road Reserve, Turramurra - adjacent to the tennis courts (UBD 154 K9 ... apt)
St Ives Showground, St Ives - there are dog rings (UBD 155 J1)
Phillip Road Reserve, St Ives Chase - a grassed area (UBD 135 C16)
Roseville Park, Roseville - in the area between the access road and the rear of adjoining properties (UBD 175 H16)

Lane Cove

In 1998, Lane Cove had 15 leash-free areas ...
TambPark3.jpg (16263 bytes)
Northwood Reserve, Northwood (UBD 5 Q3)
Greendale Park, Greenwich (UBD 6 H2)
Ronald Avenue Reserve, Greenwich (UBD 215 J4) ... A walk appears to link to Gore Creek Reserve (also an off-leash area) in the open fields when organised games are not in progress
Newlands Park, Wollstonecraft / St Leonards (UBD 215 N7)
Tambourine Bay Reserve, Riverview (UBD 215 A7) ... pictured left
Blackman Park in Lane Cove West on open playing fields when games are not in progress and on foreshore areas (UBD 214 L2)
Stringy Bark Creek Reserve in Lane Cove in the open field area bounded by Ralston, Murray and Nundah Streets, Karilla and Centennial Avenues (UBD 195 D15)
Gamma Road Reserve adjacent to Lane Cove Country Club (UBD 215 F4) and Lane Cove Golf Course (Country Club) between the hours of Sunset and 7:30am (Standard Time) and Sunset to 6:30am (Daylight Saving)
Woodford Bay Park foreshore area off Woodford Street, Longueville (UBD 215 F8)
Tantallon Oval, Lane Cove when organised games are not in progress (UBD 195 A15)
Cuninghams Reach off Loop Road in Linley Point (UBD 214 L8)
Pottery Green, Lane Cove when games are not in progress (UBD 215 E2)
Kingsford Smith Oval, Longueville when games are not in progress (UBD 5 G1)

I have filled in a feedback form for Lane Cove Council (where I now live) and await a reply.

Manly

In 1998, Manly allowed dogs to be unleashed on all public reserves excepting that no dogs were allowed on beaches or in swimming enclosures. No dogs on Shelley Beach Reserve.  In Clontarf Reserve and South Steyne Reserve dogs must be leashed between the hours of 10am and 8pm eastern summer time (daylight saving) and 10am and 6pm eastern standard time.   In Clontarf Reserve dogs must also be leashed on weekends, school holidays and public holidays.

In 1998 I wrote ... "It is clear from their brochure, however, that there have been problems with irresponsible owners who haven't kept their dog under proper voice-control and who haven't cleaned up after their dog.  This means that one of the most progressive Councils in Sydney may need to get tough and prohibit dogs from some parks because some people are spoiling it for all the good dog-people and their obedient, well-socialised dogs.   This is a tragedy.  If you don't want to obey the rules, please stay out of these parks."  Unfortunately a great swimming spot ... Manly Dam ... has been lost to us ... see Lost Parks

As for other current information, I have filled in a feedback form for Manly Council and await a reply.

Mosman

Mosman's website is excellent.  It is easy to find the exact information about dog-accessible areas you are looking for.  Check the most current information ... direct

As of January 2001, the full-time off-leash areas are Rawson Park (UBD 217 D10) and Plunkett Street Park (UBD 217 E8) and Reid Park (UBD 8L4) and Spit Reserve West (UBD 197 C14)

There are three more off-leash areas which are off-leash all day Monday to Friday but only before 9am and after 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays.  These are: Clifton Gardens (UBD 217 D12) and Rosherville Reserve which is also known as Chinaman's Beach Reserve (UBD 217 C2) and Sirius Park which includes dog swimming at Sirius Cove (UBD 8P8)

This information is exactly the same as it was in 1998 so Mosman is also wonderfully consistent!

North Sydney

North Sydney's website is also informative and their claim to be a dog-friendly area must be supported.  Check the most current information ... direct ... but remember to check out the main North Sydney website for all terms and conditions of use or start there and select Search then Index then D for Dog ...

North Sydney in January 2001, as it was in 1998, is so dog-friendly that it does not actually list the dog-friendly areas by name but by exception ... only the few places where dogs are not allowed are listed!

TigaDotti.JPG (11367 bytes)

Tiga and Dotti, two Dalmatians from Sydney's northside, like Tunks Park in Northbridge - just off Strathallen Avenue - but not on weekends when it's used for organised sports.  I've checked it out, though, and it's OK if you go early - the only people there then are dog-people and boating-people.  You can walk right up under the old bridge and beyond.

Pittwater

Check the most current information ... direct ... or go to the main site and select the A-Z then D for Dog ...
The top award goes to Rowland Reserve (UBD 118 H13) at Bayview which is one of my absolute favourite dog-parks in the whole of Sydney.

Hitchcock Park Careel Bay - that's the Northern Section - access off Etival Street (UBD 99 B10).  The picture I took there didn't work too well.  There is a triangular area for dog wading outside the environmental protection area (naturally) but it doesn't extend too far out into the water - even Maja (my friend the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) could still stand up at its technical limit when we went.  Pretty ... but Bayview is still my favourite!

Dearin Reserve, Newport (UBD 118 K12 ) ... this park is directly opposite and visible from Rowland Reserve.  It has a lovely sloping grassy knoll and access to the water at the bottom but hasn't got the sandy beaches of Bayview.
Deep Creek Reserve, North Narrabeen/Elanora Heights (UBD 157 P2 ) - This appears to be alongside Narrabeen Lagoon ... I shall have to check it out.  I have had e-mail from Tigga the Border Collie who advises that this park is a little secluded and is mostly used during the busier times of the day.  There is also an occasional hazard from broken glass in the water from bottles thrown in my irresponsible humans - this is not good news!  So be careful here!
South Mona Vale Headland (UBD 138 N3 )
Progress Park, Narrabeen (UBD 138 E13 )

Tigga also advises that McCarrs Creek Reserve is not actually a Lost Park - it just doesn't seem to feature on the Pittwater Website ... but the signs are still up.  Make sure you check this though if you go!

Although many of these parks are alongside the water, be careful with the exact status of water access due to this quote from the site ... "Dogs are not permitted on beaches in the Pittwater area.  However, water access for your dog can be used at Rowland Reserve at Bayview and a trial area at Careel Bay at the end of Etival street."

Ryde

In 1998 Ryde was the only northern suburb council with no official off-leash areas.  The Companion Animals Act now requires all Councils to have at least one off-leash area available at all times.

I have now e-mailed Ryde Council and await a reply.

Warringah

In 1998 Warringah had 6 off-leash areas ...
Flora and Richie Roberts Reserve, Curl Curl (UBD 178 F12)
Frenchs Forest Showground (UBD 156 F16 and 176 F1)
Griffith Park, Collaroy (UBD 158 J16)
Hinkler Park, Queenscliffe (UBD 198 A3)
John Fisher Park, Curl Curl (UBD 178 B11) but east of Travers Road (UBD 178 D12)
Beverly Job Park, Narraweena - off The Circle (UBD 177 P5)

I have filled in a feedback form for Warringah Council for 2001 and await a reply.

I particularly wonder if they still have their 'Reward a Responsible Owner' Program!  Let's face it, if you and the responsible human attached to the other end of your leash were handed a dog-treat out of the blue, wouldn't you be astonished?!

Willoughby

In 1998 Willoughby had 14 off-leash areas ...
Park behind 48 Barcoo Street, Roseville (UBD 195 N4)
Park at end of Mowbray Road along Eastern Valley Way, Willoughby (UBD 196 D13)
Munro Park off Small Street, Willoughby (UBD 196 B16) and Dawson and Market Streets, Naremburn (UBD 216 D2)
West Street Reserve off Grafton Avenue, Naremburn (UBD 216 C3)
Naremburn Park off Park Road, Naremburn - not in the children's fenced off playing area and not during organised games (UBD 215 P2)
Reserve off the southern side of Parkes Road, Artarmon between Hampden and Cleland Roads (UBD 215 L1)
Artarmon Oval off Burra Road, Artarmon - not in the surrounding bushland, children's playing area or BBQ areas and not during organised games (UBD 195 N16)
Blue Gum Park, Chatswood West opposite Peckham Avenue (UBD 195 F7)
Campbell Park, Chatswood West (UBD 195 F13)
O.H. Reid Reserve, West Chatswood - not in the surrounding bushland, children's playing area or BBQ areas and not during organised games (UBD 195 A10)
Castle Cove Reserve, Castle Cove - not in the surrounding bushland, children's playing area or BBQ areas and not during organised games (UBD 196 C2)
Beauchamp Park Oval, Chatswood but not near the children's playing area or BBQ areas and not during organised games (UBD 195 K7)
Bales Park, Chatswood - not near the children's playing facilities, not during organised games AND only from one hour before sunset through to one hour after sunrise (UBD 195 N10)
Willoughby Park Oval No.2 off Warrane Road, Willoughby (UBD 196 C9) from 6am to 8am and 4.40pm to 6.30pm ( Standard Time) and from 5.30am to 7.30am and 6.30pm to 8.30pm ( Daylight Saving)

For 2001 information, I have e-mailed Willoughby Council and await a reply.

The information in these pages comes directly from the councils concerned, however, it can only be considered current on the day it is written.  Always, always look for the signs in every park you visit.  If the rules have changed, these signs take precedence over anything written in this site.  If you do discover changes, please e-bark me immediately!

Just a final few words ...

Always remember that even in off-leash areas all dogs must still be under effective control and must not leave any deposits.  Please make sure that your dog - especially your puppy - is fully up-to-date with all their vaccinations before going to any parks.  Our friend Leelou, the Rottweiler, contracted Parvo Virus as a puppy shortly after a park visit - though, of course, she could have picked it up anywhere.  She has recovered brilliantly but not every puppy is so lucky.  Ticks are also becoming more common in the  Sydney Metropolitan Area.  Please ask your vet for advice.
