My Holidays

This is where I highlight the excellent holidays and weekend breaks that can be had with your dog.  Naturally, for purely logistical reasons, these are biased to a reasonable proximity of my home city of Sydney, Australia ... though trips to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth are on the cards in the next year or so ... if we receive an invitation ... I've already been to Canberra and Brisbane.

For worldwide readers, perhaps you'd like to do a spot of field research for similar places in your country ... and I'll link to your pages.  Incidentally, if you are contemplating coming for a long holiday and want to bring your dog (or cat) with you on an Australian trip I should warn you that it won't exactly be the easiest thing in the world to achieve even with the growing push for pet-passports in the developed countries of the world where animals are well-cared for and diligently vaccinated ... so start planning early, really early.  Australia has very strict quarantine regulations and for very good reasons.  We have unique fauna and flora and we are free of many nasty animal diseases such as rabies and foot & mouth ... and we'd like to keep it that way.  No offence.  For current official information, please visit the website of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service - their information always takes precedence on such matters.

Meanwhile ... back in NSW ... and just loving those country roads ...

Dog-Friendly Accommodation

So far, I've been to Tapio Guesthouse in a Garden in Oberon (south of Lithgow over the Blue Mountains)

Lloran Cottages in Robertson in the Southern Highlands

Gracemere Grange in Dorrigo on the mid North Coast of NSW.

Plus Acacia Grove and Huntley's Old Butter Factory both in Orange!

How to find places for you and your dogs to stay together ...

There's Dog's Life Magazine which has lots of good articles and including advertising.

There's "Pets Welcome Accommodation Guide" by Joanne Colak.  It is published by Cobra Consulting in Melbourne and I have the 1997 and the 2001 edition.  This is the book in which I found Lloran and Gracemere.

There's "Life Be In It: Holidaying with Dogs" available in book stores and some of the bigger newsagents or by calling (within Australia) 03 9820 5900 ... outside Australia add a 61 and drop the first zero.  This book is now in its 6th Edition ... look for the 2001-2002 date in the top left-hand corner!  It has been upgraded since the 5th Edition and now has colour coded pages for each of the states and many more colour pictures of places to stay.  Truly excellent places win a Five Paw Rating for Dog Friendly Accommodation.

The competition for the best dog-friendly accommodation seems to run bi-annually.  Once again there is a form inside the book with a closing date of 2nd September 2002.  So ... enjoy your field research!  Don't forget to pick up a form - or use the one in the book - and nominate your favourite place!

There are also a series of books called "Dogs on Holiday" of which I've got the "Go South" one.  This covers Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.  It's in the house because a trip so far south would be of the planned rather than the spontaneous variety.  This book is copyright to Julie and Enzo Coco 1994.  I also bought it in a bookstore.

Feel free to e-bark me about any great places you've found!

Canberra

In Winter 1999, I went to down to Canberra (the capital city of Australia) with my pack to stay with a friend and help him with his paving.  Don't you think I make an excellent foreman?  I am holding that string line in place very subtly!
