Off-Leash Dog Parks in the Inner Western Suburbs of Sydney

Including the Local Government Areas of Ashfield, Auburn, Burwood, Canada Bay (formerly Concord and Drummoyne) Leichhardt, Marrickville and Strathfield

Incredible as it may seem only three of these seven (formerly eight) councils have a website.

Ashfield (no website)

In 1998 Ashfield Council does not have any off-leash areas.  Other parks can be used by leashed dogs.

Now, of course, the Companion Animals Act requires at least one off-leash area to be available at all times.  I am awaiting Snail Mail.

Auburn

According the the Auburn Council Website, dogs can run free off the leash in four (4) areas of the Auburn Council. These areas are:

Coleman Park, Berala - Southern End (UBD 232 B12)
Lidcombe Oval in Wyatt Park, Auburn - Northern Side (UBD 232 B5)
Webbs (Avenue) Park, Auburn - South East Corner (UBD 231 H5)
Deakin Park, Silverwater - South East Corner (UBD 212 C14)

Burwood (no website)

In 1998 there were no prohibited areas in Burwood but no off-leash areas either.  Burwood Council considered that its parkland resources were too limited to devote any to off-leash dogs.

Now, of course, the Companion Animals Act requires at least one off-leash area to be available at all times.  I am awaiting Snail Mail.

Canada Bay - formerly Concord and Drummoyne (no website)

In 1998, Concord had only one off-leash area (and the use of that was very restricted) at Majors Bay Reserve, north-east of the the BMX track but only between the hours of 4:30pm and 8:30pm (UBD 213 H16)

Drummoyne, however, had 4 off-leash areas in 1998:

Five Dock Park at the Bowling Club end off Ingham Avenue, Five Dock (UBD 234 G9)
Drummoyne Park off Bayswater Street, Drummoyne (UBD 234 N2)
Lysaght Park off Bibby Street, Chiswick (UBD 234 J3)
Halliday Park off Udall Avenue, Five Dock (UBD 234 E7)

The letter we got from Drummoyne in 1998 did not indicate time-limits but, on inspection, Halliday and Lysaght Parks were certainly only before 9am and after 5pm.

I am awaiting snail-mail for the current status report.

Leichhardt

In 1998 Leichhardt had 7 off-leash areas:

Federal Park, Glebe - in the area between the Railway Viaduct and Chapman Road (UBD 11 P9)
Hawthorne Canal, Leichhardt - Home of Cafe Bones  ( UBD 234 L15)
Elkington Park, Balmain - White Horse Point area ( UBD 9 M6)
Birchgrove Park, Balmain - Area bounded by Birchgrove Avenue, the oval enclosure and fence separating Parkview Tennis Court and Deloitte Avenue ( UBD 10 C2)
King George Park, Rozelle - the area near Victoria Road which is  pictured at right ( UBD 9 D13-E12)
Thornton Park, Balmain - high level above playground ( UBD 10 N8)
Spindlers Park, Annandale - across canal ( UBD 11 P12)

I am currently awaiting e-mail regarding the current situation ...

Marrickville

Awaiting e-mail

In 1998, Marrickville Council had one leash free area for dogs at the Enmore TAFE Park at Simmons Street, Newtown.  UBD 17 M1... I assume, though it is not shown.

Strathfield (no website)

In 1998, Strathfield Council allowed leashed dogs in all its parks, reserves and natural areas excepting only Cox's Reserve where dogs were prohibited.  Their letter also said: 'Unfortunately, Strathfield Council at this stage does not have unleashed dog areas.'

Now, of course, the Companion Animals Act requires at least one off-leash area to be available at all times.  I am awaiting Snail Mail.

The information in these pages comes directly from the councils concerned, however, it can only be considered current on the day it is written.  Always, always look for the signs in every park you visit.  If the rules have changed, these signs take precedence over anything written in this site.  If you do discover changes, please e-bark me immediately!

Just a final few words ...

Always remember that even in off-leash areas all dogs must still be under effective control and must not leave any deposits.  Please make sure that your dog - especially your puppy - is fully up-to-date with all their vaccinations before going to any parks.  Our friend Leelou, the Rottweiler, contracted Parvo Virus as a puppy shortly after a park visit - though, of course, she could have picked it up anywhere.  She has recovered brilliantly but not every puppy is so lucky.  Ticks are also becoming more common in the  Sydney Metropolitan Area.  Please ask your vet for advice.
