Off-Leash Dog Parks in Sydney City and the Eastern Suburbs

Including the Local Government Areas of Botany Bay, Randwick, South Sydney, Sydney City, Waverley and Woollahra

Botany Bay

The 1998 letter from the City of Botany Bay was succinct.  There were no official off-leash areas nor any prohibited areas with all parks being accessible on-leash.  Now, of course, under the Companion Animals Act, there must be at least one off-leash areas.  I shall have to write to Botany Bay Council as they only included Councillors email addresses on their site - rather than an address for the webmaster or general council.

Rosie, a rottie, told me about a popular park on Foreshore Road in Botany.  She says it might not be the most scenic beach around but at least its dog friendly!  It is officially a leashed area, so be aware of that.

Randwick

From 1998 to 2001 Randwick has provided 13 areas where dogs can be exercised off-leash - with only one change.  Be careful, though, because all but one of these parks have an area which is out-of-bounds which has a 10 metre exclusion zone around it.  But now you can check their up-to-date information ... direct ...!

Burrows Park in Clovelly but not in the bushland or on the rugby  sports field.
Pioneers Park in Malabar but not in the bushland or on the rugby and cricket sports fields.
Ella Reserve in South Malabar but not around the children's playground.
Coral Sea Park in Maroubra but not around the children's playground or on the rugby and cricket sports fields including the cricket practice net area.
Bardon Park in Coogee but not on the rugby and cricket sports fields.
Baker Park in Coogee but not around the children's playground or on the tennis and netball courts.
Bangor Park in South Coogee but not around the children's playground.
Blenheim Park in South Coogee but not around children's playground.
Paine Reserve in Kingsford but not around the children's playground or on the soccer and cricket sports fields.
Broadarrow Reserve at Maroubra Beach - yes, all of it!
Snape Park in Maroubra but not around the children's playground or on the inner fenced oval area, the netball courts, the tennis courts or the rugby and cricket sports fields.
Nagel Park in Maroubra but not around the children's playground or on the rugby and cricket sports fields.
Tennery Reserve, Coogee - yes, all of it!

The only change since 1998 is that Tennery Reserve has replaced Woomera Reserve in Little Bay.

South Sydney

By 2001, South Sydney had added several parks to the three major parks of 1998.

Victoria Park on Broadway - UBD 14 L3.
Sydney Park - UBD 18 ... it is over 40 hectares so you can't miss it!
Harry Noble Reserve off Fox Avenue in Erskineville - UBD 14 K15.

Dogs are banned from lots of smaller parks (almost all those under 600 square metres) and, obviously, from playgrounds.  They are also banned from a few larger parks so look for the signs!  Small parks are not to be confused with street closures where dogs are allowed on-leash.  I am happy to say that I have noticed doggy-do bins are proliferating all over South Sydney's Parks but I shall have to snail-mail them for more up-to-date information.

Sydney Park has lots of space and is becoming more popular - lots of dogs are walked here.  Use the Dog Tidy Bins!

Sydney City

In 1998 they failed to answer my letter.  The City of Sydney website is as excellently presented as you would expect of a capital city ... but it does not feature off-leash areas.  I shall have to write to them and hope for a better reply this time!

Waverley

Waverley has much improved since 1998 when they did not answer my letter.  Now you can check their up-to-date information ... direct ...!

Centennial Park - Outer Limits (UBD 16 N12)
Rodney Reserve, Dover Heights - Southern End (UBD 238 B11)
Waverley Park, Bondi - Adjacent to the Tennis Courts in the South-West Corner (UBD 257 H5)
Queens Park - Northern Slopes (UBD 257 D7)
Diamond Bay Reserve (UBD 238 A6)
Varna Park, Clovelly - Eastern Half (UBD 257 G10)

Woollahra

For 2001 information ... Woollahra has a good website so you can check the current information for all their parks with their status with respect to dogs ... direct ... n 1998 there were 6 off-leash areas ... the list of parks on their website includes mention of their dog status but I shall have to print them out and check one by one!

Christison Park, Vaucluse (UBD 238 B3)
Dumaresque Reserve, Rose Bay (UBD 237 M8)
Lyne Park, Rose Bay (UBD 237 K10)
Lough Playing Fields, Double Bay (UBD 257 D1)
Rushcutters' Bay Park (UBD 4 K8)
Yarranabbe Park, Darling Point (UBD 4 N3) - I like this one!

A

The information in these pages comes directly from the councils concerned, however, it can only be considered current on the day it is written.  Always, always look for the signs in every park you visit.  If the rules have changed, these signs take precedence over anything written in this site.  If you do discover changes, please e-bark me immediately!

Just a final few words ...

Always remember that even in off-leash areas all dogs must still be under effective control and must not leave any deposits.  Please make sure that your dog - especially your puppy - is fully up-to-date with all their vaccinations before going to any parks.  Our friend Leelou, the Rottweiler, contracted Parvo Virus as a puppy shortly after a park visit - though, of course, she could have picked it up anywhere.  She has recovered brilliantly but not every puppy is so lucky.  Ticks are also becoming more common in the  Sydney Metropolitan Area.  Please ask your vet for advice.
