SIR WILLIAM DOBELL 1899 1970

William (Bill) Dobell was borne in Newcastle NSW September 24, 1899. He became one of Australia's most famous and contraversial artists. When his painting of fellow artist, Joshua Smith was challenged after winning the Archibald Prize in 1943. His detractors argued it is a caricature. Dobell was so upset he retreated to his home in Wangi Wangi. September, 1999 was the 100th anniversary of his birth. We thought it appropriate to recognise this landmark date by devoting one of my pages to him.

My husband, George Finn, an amateur artist, painted the picture of Dobell on the top left. Dobell is illustrated standing in front of two of his most famous paintings, Joshua Smith and Margaret Olley, both winners of the Archibald Prize. Dobell was generous with his talents. For example, he painted The Three Magi for the Girl Guides.

When we lived in Wangi Wangi, we were both members of the committee that operated Dobell House, the former home of Sir William Dobell, now a Museum of Memorabillia and an arts exhibition venue. Dobell House is illustrated at centre left.

Dobell House is maintained by volunteers and is open to visitors. It is located at the corner of Dobell Place and Dobell Drive in Wangi Wangi on beautiful Lake Macquarie. Wangi Lions Club provides free electric Bar-B-Qs in a nearby park and local clubs cater for visitors who would like to purchase a meal. Bookings to vist Dobell House can be made by telephoning Auriol Royds at (02) 4975 1303. Coach parties are most welcome.
