QUAD-PLATE MRL
Finite Element Analysis of arbitrarily-shaped plates with fractures.
QUAD-PLATE MRL is mathematical software package for highly accurate and efficient Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of stresses, strains and deflections arising in 2D engineering structures comprised of plates (reinforced concrete slabs representing particularly important case) and beams. The primary feature of this program is the capability to analyze the slab post-fracture deformed shape and stress factors distribution.

QUAD-PLATE MRL is logical continuation of our earlier product QUAD-PLATE-2D. The main objective of QUAD-PLATE MRL project was to develop an engineering analysis tool that would complement commercial structural software packages, a tool that would allow the user to perform meshing of complex, irregular (non-rectangular) shaped real-life floor plans, and carry out complete stress-strain analysis of such floor plans with meshes that comprise hundreds of thousands of finite elements. A completely new feature of this product is the capability to include into the model components named "moment-release lines", which are mathematical analogue of cracks developing in plates (slabs) under excessive load. QUAD-PLATE MRL also has a user-friendly interface that helps the user to accelerate the structural analysis initial set-up phase.

QUAD-PLATE MRL allows the user to read a floor plan layout from its input data file and visually inspect it, automatically create a quadrilateral mesh of the floor plan, set the slab material properties, apply loads, concentrated forces and boundary constraints, and create a supporting beams structure. QUAD-PLATE MRL automatically runs the structural analysis software for the meshed floor plan, after which QUAD-PLATE MRL post-processor displays 2D and 3D views of the computational results: deflections (distorted slab surface), slab stress factors (internal stress resultant forces and moments) and reactions at constrained nodes.

QUAD-PLATE MRL is offered with complete source codes written in standard C/C++. It is available without any royalties or additional fees.

Below we present several examples of plates with moment release lines, processed by QUAD-PLATE MRL. The following results are provided:

  • deflections
  • bending moments
  • twisting moment
  • transversal shear forces

  • For all examples, the following parameters' values have been set:

    Young modulus E=30 GPa
    Poisson ratio v=0.2
    Slab thickness h=0.15 m
    Distributed vertical load p = -5000 N/m**2

Example 1. Rectangular slab, jammed on the left-hand and right-hand edges, with two moment-release lines.
    Deformed shape.
    Mx contours.
    My contours.
    Mxy contours.
    Qx contours.
    Qy contours.
Example 2. Rectangular slab with slanted moment-release line.
    Meshed rectangle with slanted line.
    Mx contours.
    My contours.
    Mxy contours.
    Qx contours.
    Qy contours.
Example 3. Polygonal slab with several moment-release lines.
    Polygonal model with dimensions.
    Deformed polygonal model.
    Mx contours.
    My contours.
    Mxy contours.
    Qx contours.
    Qy contours.
Example 4. Square-shaped, fully jammed plates: isotropic and orthotropic.

In this example, the plate shown on the right has the bending stiffness in the OY direction just a half of the bending stiffness in the OX direction. The plate shown on the left, has equal bending stiffnesses in both directions. Each of the plates is jammed along all four edges.

    My contours.
    Mxy contours.
    Qx contours.
    Qy contours.
    Deformed squares.
