Complex searches are best carried out using Boolean Search Operators

Different Valid Spellings

When carrying out searches remember the different spellings that our cousins across the waters may use
There are TWO valid spellings for some concepts eg sterilize OR sterilise and center OR centre.

Boolean Search Operators

Usual Boolean logic terms for most search engines are AND OR NOT & NEAR.
But Beware - with AltaVista the NOT search operator must be typed in as AND NOT.
With the Excite search engine you can use shorthand + for AND and - for NOT or AND NOT.
Now aren't you glad I made that so clear!*?

Searching for - infection AND control - will result in list based on searches looking for BOTH the words infection and control that appear anywhere in the search sample. This may bring up some reference with nothing to do with Dentistry, simlpy because BOTH the words appear in that section of the page that is "sampled". With some search engines this may be as few as the first 20 words of the Web page, but with the Advanced Searches such as those carried out by
Alta Vista Advanced Search the "sample" will include ALL of the text on EVERY page in the search base
(for AltaVista this was in excess of 140 Million references at last count.)

Searching for phrases

Searching for words typed within quotation marks such as "infection control" will find references where the phrase within the quotation marks appears in the search sample.

Searching for variations of a word

Typing in dent* (dent followed by the ' * ' sign) for an advanced search will search for ANY word that starts with the letters dent ; such as dentist, dental, dentistry, dentine or denture. (and unfortunately dented)

Select LOCATION and then on the next page select CYBERPLACE and enter the minimum information to identify the home page URL. ( www.sitename.com.until_the_first_slash/ )

Some SPECIFIC SITES you might want to search are;
