I have begun a new project, a 20 inch lightweight (superlight?) Dobsonian. I am hoping that it will weigh in at around 27kg (60lb) with the finderscope/counterweight tipping the scales at 2.5kg (5.5lb). The main mirror is f5 and was ground by Mark Suchting. These are so good I have 3 of them, a 10", a 12" and now a 20".
Ok, I've finished it off finally. A small mod to the flex ring to keep the dust and dirt out of the azimuth and some baffles. 3 in all a focuser, secondary and primary baffle will be added. I changed to round poles and added Ron's knobs and split blocks. All up weight without the 6 inch on its back is 42kg or 92.5lb, a little over the original 60lb I was thinking of. That was probably a bit of pie in the sky stuff anyhow. The final individual sub-sections weigh up at: Mirror-18kg; Mirrorbox and primary cell-12.8kg; Secondary mirrror, ring and focuser-2.4kg; Poles-5.4kg; Ground ring and flex rocker-3.4kg I will post a pic or 2 in a fortnight when it is out again. Official sort of first light was last new moon. It went together very easily and will be a 15 minute put up and 15 minute tear down sort of telescope, 10 if you jogged, probably. It fits easily into my brother's 121 Mazda including a ladder with nothing on the roof, (I'll even post a pic of that). To cap it all off I'm real pleased how it turned out even if it took a bit longer to finish. Next some binos!!!

The top ring is built from 3mm ply and uses "W" bracing to give it strength and rigidity. |
The spider and secondary holder mounted in the top ring. The whole sub-assembly weighs in at 1.2kg. |
The mirrorbox incorporates the altitude bearings into its' design. This sub-assembly weighs in at 6.2kg. |
|
The spider will employ wire vanes to keep the weight low. |

The business end of the telescope as it arrived today. |
The ground ring before the laminate and west epoxy coat. |
Focuser after 1/8" machined out to cut vignetting. |
The ground ring and flex rocker playing stealth in the grass. |
Setting up for pole length. |
Pointing at Eta Carinae |
|
Nothing up my sleeve... except a mirror of course. |
Packed and off for a spot of observing. |
Added 3ply wings to keep bearing dust free, sort of. |

Ready. |
Set. |
Done!!. |
Poles in, easy as. |
With the mirror box lid shut... |
...and opened showing the mirror baffle. |
Showing the top ring and secondary baffle. There is a focuser baffle installed also. |
The inclusion of the baffles have cut stray light to no glare. |
Completed with baffles for the first time, great views. |
