Now I've been researching my ancestry in Yorkshire's West Riding in the 19th century, and have found out the following: My great-grandfather was a George Wormald (b. 1st February 1884 in Bradford), who emigrated late last century to Sydney's North Shore in Australia with his brother Bert (Herbert, b. ~1883 in Bradford). Bert never married and moved to Brisbane. Their father Abraham Wormald was a yarn merchant (on the 1881 census, his occupation is Cotton warp salesman) who moved to Manningham in Bradford's western suburbs around 1872-3. George had older brothers Henry S. (b. ~1872), Edgar Snowdon (b. ~1873, d. 30/10/1907 in Bradford), Stanley (b. ~1877), Percy (b. ~1879), as well as Bert. On Abraham's wedding certificate he was described as a salesman and was living in Adwalton. He was born in Drighlington, southeast of Bradford, on January 9 1848 to an Isaac Wormald, who was a mason, and Ann Snowden. His wife was a Mary Cooper, born 15 September 1847 in a village called Adwalton, which is nearby. Her parents were a Tom Cooper, butcher (b. abt 1820), and a Susannah Sykes (chr. 17 May 1818). Tom appears to have come from a family of butchers as his father John (born about 1795) was also a butcher and brother George. Unfortunately for Tom, he died prematurely on March 18th 1856 at the age of 35 of Delirium Tremens (presumably severe alcohol withdrawal) which had lasted for 6 days. Interestingly, the informant on his death certificate, William Blakey, later married his widow Susannah... Isaac Wormald was christened in the parish of Birstall (which contains the above 2 towns) on 10th November 1816, and his parents were an Abraham Wormald (born about 1781 - d. 31 May 1847) and Betty Wilson. Abraham, also a Stonemason, and Betty were married 30 September 1804. Isaac appears to be a younger child, with John (b. 1807) and Jane (b. 1809) as older siblings. Ann Snowden was christened in the parish of Birstall on 5th February 1813, and her parents were Samuel Snowden (b. abt 1787) and Elizabeth Haley (b. abt 1786). |
