I have links in several counties in the south of England. As yet, I've
been unable to explore them thoroughly but have many leads to follow
up. My great-great grandmother, one Annie Archer (born 1851 in London) emigrated from England to New Zealand where she married a Robert Thompson from Belfast in Christchurch. I know little of her apart from the fact that she was voting in NZ and living in Dunedin at the turn of the century. Another ancestor, one William John Quartley Payne (b.8th Oct. 1849) was born in London and emigrated to Australia in 1878. His parents were a Thomas Payne, a draper, and an Eliza Maria Quartley. They were married in London in St. Pancras Old Church on May 26th 1844. Neither was from London. Eliza was born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset on August 10 1816 to a William James Quartley, stationer and his second wife Mary Jones, originally from Keynsham, Gloucestershire. Quartley had originally been based in Somerset but seems to have relocated to London prior to 1824. Thomas was born 28 October 1812 to William Payne (b.1765 - d. 1826) who was a butcher and his wife Ann Forshaw (b.~1777 - d.1863), a schoolmistress, in Coleshill, Warwickshire. His older sister Mary (b.1804 - d. 7 February 1887) married a John Wilkins (b. ~1810-d.1880) who was a draper so it may have been how or where Thomas picked up the trade. The family had returned to Warwickshire by 1851 but Thomas died prematurely on December 3rd 1855 in Solihull. The cause of death was listed as 'Albumenuria' of 12months' duration (presumably some form of chronic renal failure?)
Eliza died in Solihull on August 13 1887. |
