A History of the Food Intolerance Network: FIN Many years ago Australian food intolerance counsellor Sue Dengate (a mother and former teacher) found surprisingly successful solutions to her children's behaviour and learning problems. The solutions were the result of research carried out around 1985, and published by Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Allergy Clinic, Sydney. With the support of her food technologist husband, Howard, she has worked tirelessly to spread awareness of food intolerance in the Australian community and in the world at large. To quote what she said some years ago: "If we don't do something about this problem now then our children have a bleak future ahead of them". Her determination to spread this food intolerance awareness impelled Sue to publish her first book "Different Kids" in 1994. This very popular book was followed by the internationally popular food intolerance handbook "Fed Up" (1998). The publishing of "Fed Up" also introduced the mnemonic: 'FAILSAFE' ©. Since then Sue has published the "Failsafe Cookbook" (2001), "Fed Up with Asthma" (2003) and "Fed Up with ADHD (2004). Sue's books are best sellers. They are based on proven medical research, on her own experience as a food intolerance counsellor, and on feedback from literally hundreds of families who have benefited from her work. Her books are to be found in all good bookshops and in many newsagents and supermarkets. Sue's research concerning the behavioural effects of a common bread preservative (calcium propionate 282) was published in a medical journal in 2002. Her research and books have been featured on national television. She travels in Australia, New Zealand other countries doing research and giving seminars. In 1998, Sue and Howard started a support website containing a treasure trove of information, material, stories, recipes, contact details, research reports and much more: (www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info). A FAILSAFE newsletter is published regularly and is available free on the internet. Food intolerance effects at least 20 times more people than do allergies. Theoretically natural or added chemicals in food can effect everyone as food intolerance is dose related and accumulative (how much is ingested relative to body size, and how long it has been consumed). In recent years many, have been searching for information about the effect of food on their children's behaviour and health. A very large percentage of doctors are unable to give this help due to their lack of familiarity with diet and food intolerance. Despite this situation the need for parents to be able to do something for their family is often critically urgent. It cannot wait for medical practice to change. People have searched bookshops, libraries and the internet. This has resulted in them finding Sue Dengate's Internet web site (www.fedupwithfoodadditives.info), or her books. Others have seen her on television or have heard her being interviewed on radio. The website is referred to in her books. This website contains information about email chat groups where people help one another to come to grips with food intolerance in its many forms. Hundreds of people have joined these large food intolerance e-mail chat groups. There are different chat groups concentrating on different food intolerance topics. They cover those using basic low chemical foods: 'FailsafeBasic', the original 'Failsafe' group plus its expansion to include 'Failsafe2' and 'Failsafe3'; 'FailsafeBaby'; 'FailsafeAdult'; and one for the USA, FailsafeUSA. There are also some regional groups run by group leaders. Due to the high demand, groups have had to be limited to 100 to 150 members per group and may be temporarily closed to newcomers from time to time. People
are encouraged to organise their own local or family groups, these may be
phone groups, It's an environment where you don't have to explain why "Jack or Jill can't eat that!" to anyone! Instead you can relax a little. The necessity to oversight foods eaten is understood by all. The group is able to provide support by the sharing of stories and successes and giving help. When parents with children are able to meet. Their children are able to see and share their lives with others like themselves. They can learn that they are not alone. They see others like themselves with the same eating restrictions. The children can form friendships with others in a relatively safe eating environment. This support helps our young people immensely.
Mothers have expressed a great need for this type of support. At these local meetings of friends, picnics etc. there is:

Illawarra & South
Coast - This area has been selected initially to cover a wider area in an attempt to help produce communities who may be some distance from the Wollongong / Shellharbour area (see below). Members can share stories and success, discuss food sources, sympathetic medical and dietary help in the wider South Eastern NSW Area. A distance of approximately a day's return vehicle trip from Wollongong makes it possible for us to attend meetings in these extended areas. |
