John was born in Manchester - he was baptised in 1822, together with his brothers, Edward and William Henry. His parents were recorded as John and Frances. Ann was born in Runcorn, Cheshire. They married in Liverpool but all the children were born in Cheshire. In 1861 they were living at Douglas, on the Isle of Man, where John died - he was buried at Braddan, near Douglas, on 5 Feb 1865.
In 1871 Ann was living with daughter Anne Mary, who had married Edward Pemberton in 1869. Edward was also the executor named on the Death Duty Register when Ann died in Oxford on 10 Jan 1897.
