George James was born in Clarence Plains, Tasmania, an area on the eastern side of the River Derwent (current suburb of Rokeby). His parents were George Smith, a British marine, and Grace Morrisby, the daughter of James Morrisby and Ann Brooks, convicts who had settled in Clarence Plains.
Ann was born in Hobart, the daughter of Thomas Kidner and the convict Elizabeth Birkitt.
George and Ann married in 1837 at Clarence Plains.
