Philip was born at East Newlyn, Cornwall, and Maria Ellen at St Agnes. They married at Truro in 1853.
Philip sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne on board 'Star of the East' (with Maria's brother Paul) in 1854, and Maria & Mary on 'Eastern City' in 1857.
They settled in the Creswick area, near Ballarat.
