THE FUNERAL SERVICE - Where does the music fit in?

A typical Funeral Service might consist of the following:

  • A Prelude before the service. Provides a pleasant and welcoming ambience for family, friends and guest as they arrive at the church or funeral chapel.
  • An Entrance Song: To accompany the entrance of the coffin and/or clergy or simply as a "gathering" song.
  • A Psalm: Psalms are biblical songs and the psalm after a reading provides a moment for reflection. Some beautiful funeral psalm texts include "The Lord is my shepherd"(Psalm 23) or "The Lord is my light and my salvation".
  • A Hymn: Depending on the structure of the service, hymns may be included and can be an opportunity for everyone to sing. Alternatively, a solo reflection may be preferred.
  • A Song of Farewell: Many funeral services have a "final commendation". Sometimes holy water and incensed are used to honour the deceased. A song or incidental piece to accompany this action adds to the symbolic gestures. Especially suitable for this part of the service are songs such as "May the angels lead you into paradise".
  • A Recessional An instrumental piece is best to accompany the departure of the coffin and those present. Depending on preference, this may be a dignified or subdued piece, or a more triumphant and uplifting choice.

Bernard Kirkpatrick -Organist -A.mus.A., B.Ec., B.mus (Syd)
Contact Tel: Sydney- 9798 3165(hm) or 0431 457 441 (Music Secretary-Sharon)

Bernard is an experienced organist/pianist/keyboard player who is available to play or organise the finest quality music for funeral services in the Sydney Metropolitan area. Bookings can be made at short notice, and he is able to assist families, celebrants or funeral directors in planning suitable music for the farewell service of deceased loved ones. If required, he is also able to liaise with the Funeral Celebrant, Priest or Funeral Director.
You can choose from a wide repertoire ranging from classical selections to contemporary favourites or nominate your own requests. Choose from organ/keyboard instrumental only, or if you would like the services of a singer (e.g. a Soprano or tenor) or other instrumentalist (e.g. oboe, flute or trumpet) this can easily be arranged. Only musicians of the highest quality are engaged, ensuring beautiful music for a dignified ceremony. At the family's request, Bernard is also available as an accompanist for family or friends who may intend to sing or perform music at the service.

Bernard is also able to advise other selections for Catholic funerals, including well known liturgical music for a Requiem Mass. As Director of Music at St.Francis of Assisi Church,Paddington he can also arrange for a liturgical cantor.
A well trained musician can enhance the beauty of the funeral service by tailoring the music to fit the ceremony, including incidental improvisations to cover long moments of silence, or background "ambience" to accompany symbolic actions. Live performance gives a more personal feel to the service, unlike the use of CD's, which to many people may sound inferior or like "canned" music. Some funeral directors will provide names of musicians associated with a particular church or venue, but no guarantee is provided for the quality of a local organist or musician. As a professional church musician, Bernard will provide musical services of the highest standards, and will only recommend other musicians of outstanding talent.
