Ode toa rock.

by icewing

Oh little rock, as there you sit

I wonder if you ever split

Your surroundings into categories

Of trees and rocks, and other glories

Or do you sit and think and stare,

And wonder what is over there,

Beyond the trees, beyond the ridge,

Do you ever wish that you could bridge

The gap between being there and here

So you could see things that lie not near

Your little refuge in the trees,

Among the flowers and buzzing bees.

And do you ever wonder why

As unknown creatures wander by

What the big machines will do

And why the sky is not so blue

As once it was, before they came

And will it ever be the same.

Oh do you wonder why they dig

And why they rip apart the fig

And in its stead plant concrete seed

Oh do you wonder what's the need?

But do you even understand

Destruction wrought by human hand

Is making the world a better place

For the most 'intelligent' race

For now that humankind can dwell

In comfort in your little dell

Your world will be a better place

Where cars and trucks and people race

Around which most important deeds

In which they really must succeed

For if they don't then they will find

The world will leave them cruelly behind

Their lives will lack important things

Like newspapers, TV's and diamond rings

And still you lie there, quiet as ever

Oh do you realise you will never

See again the buzzing bees

Or sparrows flitting through the trees

Or hear the trilling of the lark

For now that man has left his mark

Your world will never be the same

Though people utter 'what a shame'

The sky shall be forever hidden

By concrete buildings which have been risen

To serve the selfish comfort of

Humankind, and all they now love.
