Henrietta Dubb's Meditations
Psalms and biblical songs for singing,
Lent 2005
Matthew 5:3-12
I take it that this is the record of one of
Jesus' teaching devices - it seems like a song to me - and by it disciples,
whoever they are, wherever or whenever they sing it, can remind themselves how
He views our happiness.

Don't be doubting but believe it Jesus likes it when you're glad Happy like the poor in Spirit Those who poverty have had. You're invited to the banquet, Wondrous feast for all the earth, It's His generous Father's bounty Hungry people filled with mirth. Jesus sent to be our Saviour Came to wipe away our tears Those in mourning shall find comfort God's own way to banish fears. Meek and gentle was this Shepherd, Meek and gentle so are they Who inherit all this bounty God's good gifts their lives display. |
Happy people God will surely Hungry find who thirst for right They may find it long and tiresome God shall fill them with delight. Merciful are those forgiven They will then show mercy too Deeply flows the deepening river God's love rains and soaks us through. Happy those whose hearts are pure They will see their heart's desire Jesus works in our humanity Makes us His by God's own fire Happy those who reconciling One to all and all to each Now in peace partake the surname God's own Son within our reach. |
Happy those who persecuted For their stand for truth and right. Faith will have to face the music Enemies will want to fight. Happy those who follow Jesus When insults fly and lies abound God reveals that He is working With lost people Jesus found. |

Jesus made it plain. His disciples
are to see themselves as children in His Father's Kingdom. And since this is Lent, a time of
reflection and reconsideration, it is worthwhile to re-define ourselves in
songs that children could easily sing and teach us. |
