Henrietta's Meditations
Psalms and Biblical Songs for singing, Lent 2005
With remarkable persistence religion has not gone away. Not only did I see the shelves of our local supermarket overflowing with silly Easter chocolate bunnies but the signs are also all there in the tinned fish department - "Fish for Lent". Seems it's not only politicians who make religious noises to preserve their place in the status quo. Despite all pious rhetoric about modern men and women outgrowing faith, "spirituality" is back on the agenda of our public lives.
Lent is the tradition Christian season of "prayer and fasting". The spiritual may put it "Everyone's talking about heaven ain't going there!" but now everyone in my supermarket is deciding about whether they should try (cheap) fish this Lenten season, only a select few have the foggiest idea of what it means, let alone what is to be done. And what is Pancake Tuesday? What is this start to Lent with Pancakes? Can someone please tell me?
So cutting yet another swathe through contemporary mystery I make my contribution to Lent. 5 brief meditations on bible songs, from Psalms and other places. I hope it can help us sing our way to Easter and maybe provoke some interesting thoughts along the way.
1. Psalm 67
2. Psalm 93
3. Psalm 102
