Henrietta Dubb's Diary
Blue Quilt of Sky
and Sea
To experience our place is to confront so many
shades of blue. Sky and sea are quilted together by an amazing thread
of many blue strands. Once we notice we can not forget.
There in the morning, even with a sombre grey cloud
cover, there in the east, clear as crystal, is a strip of blue, silvery pastel
over and between Mt Eliza and Arthur's Seat. Beyond Queenscliffe shines a royal
blue lining, an announcement of the sun's ascent. And overhead then, and
throughout the day, a golden blue merges with blue light and dark, and
more besides, in and out of the clouds. A deep purple out over the Rip to
the South often announces to us that Point Nepean is about to have the rain
that passed us by.
Our Lonsdale sky, at whatever time of the day, or
year, is part of the wonder of the place. The blue variety has a power to put
melancholy into perspective. There they are - different hues peeking out
through the clouds - and when the sun is in her full
smiling, crowning splendour, the bright light casts a golden canopy
in all directions ... How many blues have I strewn today? (And just as we
thought we had reached the limit the little blue wren darts in and out among
the shrubs.)
And the sea - we watch the blues come and go, ebb and
flow, and note the tides of sea and sand. Sometimes an eerie sheen will cover
the entire bight. At other times a restless verdant blue prevails. And often
still ponds each with a hue and gloss to call their own.
At night, whatever the season, the Milky Way sparkles
within a deep blue backdrop. Thousands of speckles, clouds of pin pricks so far
away. Almost audible, almost confronting us: What are we? What marvels to
behold! To wonder. Blue. Deep, deep blue.
And if we happen then along the Promenade, the dark
cover has merged sea and sky together. The water pounding on the sand tells us
we must wait for dawn if a new, blue and bright variety is to come to light
again.
