Henrietta Dubb's Diary
What's Gone Wrong? Where to Now?
How to Find the Right Path Again.
Hi there! I'm Henrietta Dubb and this is my diary. I've been around on the internet for a few years. HD is a pen-name, in honour of my maternal grandfather, Henry Dubb. Have you heard of him? He was made famous by the Christian socialist historian Richard H Tawney. I came across a quote recently and this explained aspects of my spiritual ancestry that I have wondered about all my life. I was reading through a book of Tawney's essays, The Attack and Other Papers first published in 1953 (ISBN 0 85124 312 6). As a matter of fact that was the year I was born. As a matter of shame it has taken me 50 years to learn this about Henry Dubb. If you want to read what Tawney wrote about my grand-father in his November 1935 review essay on Christianity and the Social Revolution in the New Statesman and Nation click here.
As I say, he was my maternal grandfather. It's also amazing to me that Tawney's other writings in the book, particularly of his experiences as a soldier in the first world war, are not better known. Tawney deserves to be read at this time.
Anyway, some years ago I decided to launch my own diary. I called it
Henrietta Dubb's Diary - What's Gone wrong?
Where to Now? How to Find the Right Path Again.
Here's my latest 2007 entries:
37. Stockland's Embarrassment (5.2.07)
I am trying to persuade whoever reads my stuff that we have to give up our cocky and self-assured secular outlook. In a nutshell that's what I am discussing. I'm no whingeing Pom. With all due respects to my Grandpa Henry his all-too-English world-view is the cause of a lot of unhelpful, negative whingeing. There's lots to whinge about, particularly in his country if you are allergic to xenophobia. So my Diary is actually my attempt to dig myself out of negative whingeing. My diary attempts to express my responsibility as a 50 year-old Christian citizen of Australia. I am Henry Dubb's Australian grand-daughter. I am trying to wake myself up, explaining to myself, and anyone else who is interested, what I think has gone wrong and how we can begin to find a way to exercise the stewardship God entrusts to us in this place.
So, enjoy my diary. I'll try to keep entries as long as this one. Part of the project is to learn to say it simply. Those who know me will understand how hard that is. I'll try to keep under 300 words. Promise.
