AWB Limited is the privatised company formed from the Australian Wheat Board. AWB Limited is Australia's sole exporter of wheat and is structured into different business units dealing with Australian and International wheat sales, Research and Shipping.

Achievements - Sep 2000

  • With the AWB-Australia Funding Analyst, analysed and documented procedures for management of the different types of funds used within AWB Limited.
  • Developed flowcharts of business processes involved in requesting, managing and balancing funds.


Technical Writer

Autodesk, Australia

Autodesk, Inc is contracted to Telstra to provide the PlanIt geographic information system used to manage all Telstra outside plant throughout Australia. Using VISION* software, PlanIt is Y2K compliant and replaces the existing CPR system.

Telstra external plant includes every external object in the Telstra-owned network, from the twin-pair wires bundled into cables, to the exchanges, to every manhole, pit or pole, and to every Telstra customer in Australia.

Achievements - Dec 1998 to Sep 2000

  • Developed Word 97 and Framemaker 5.5 templates to provide a standard look and feel to all PlanIt training materials.
  • Wrote (with another writer) the PlanIt Instructor's Training Manual and PlanIt User's Training Manual. The Instructor's Training Manual exceeds 700 pages, and both manuals involved obtaining information from team members located in Melbourne, Denver and Ottawa.
  • Developed (with another writer) online Help documentation for ongoing PlanIt use, using RoboHelp.
  • Maintained all documentation - online and hardcopy - through each build (41 and counting) of the application.
  • Developed the training plan for initial training of Telstra staff, to be implemented during 2001.
  • Developed user training modules for use by Telstra trainers.
  • Trained both Telstra staff and the prospective trainers. Also provided ad hoc training for newstarters on the project.
  • Performed system testing on a regular basis.

Achievements - Oct 1998 to Nov 1998

  • Developed PowerPoint templates for use by Business Analysts to document process flows for a review of the Cards area of a major Australian bank, as part of a "due diligence" exercise.
  • Set up document management process for use by a team located in Melbourne, Johannesburg, Plano (Texas) and Manchester.
  • From rough notes and draft diagrams, prepared about 130 flowcharts documenting the work practices used and proposed for the Cards area.

The Department of Education is introducing PeopleSoft as the Human Resources Management System (HRMS) for all Victorian State Primary and Secondary school staff.

Achievements - Nov 1998 (short term)

  • Investigated the use of Doc-to-Help for providing online versions of PeopleSoft user guides.
  • Created templates to be used in converting documentation, while retaining the full look and feel of the Word templates developed earlier this year.

Achievements - May 1998 to July 1998

  • Developed Word for Windows documentation templates to be used by all HRMS training staff to develop user guides and training materials.
  • Converted a number of existing documents to the new templates.
  • Instructed the PeopleSoft HRMS trainers in how to use the templates to best effect.
  • Provided advice and training as required to the PeopleSoft HRMS trainers on getting the best from Microsoft Word.
  • Developed various flowcharts documenting the work practices to be used for recruitment, additional payments and so on.

  • Developed extensive online help (using HDK) for the Pilot Lightship Executive Information System.
  • Developed introductory and training documentation for users of the Executive Information System.

I have been contracted a number of times over the last few years to Swinburne University.

Swinburne University of Technology was established in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College, and was proclaimed a university in 1992.

The Applications Management Services Unit is responsible for the implementation of University administrative applications for all campuses and Divisions. Check out the AMS homepage

Achievements - Feb 1998 to Oct 1998

  • Prepared and conducted training sessions for the University's Pandora data warehouse.
  • Conducted ASCOL training and information sessions.
  • Revised Pandora online documentation.
  • Documented timetabling process for Syllabus Plus users.
  • Reviewed the implementation of a Lotus Domino course and subject database.
  • Developed data extract mechanisms for the course and subject database to allow production of the 1999 Swinburne Handbooks.
  • Handed over the training and user documentation to a full-time trainer. This involved explaining all concepts of the ASCOL system and the training approaches used.
  • Provided training as required for Swinburne staff.
  • Developed an online version of the Overview of ASCOL user guide.

  • Produced 12 task related user guides for the IBM AS/400-based ASCOL student administration system.
  • Designed the layout for user guides and other documentation, to reflect a professional corporate image and to aid use by people of differing needs.
  • Developed 15 separate training courses, including all required documentation and Powerpoint screen presentations.
  • Trained over 500 Swinburne University staff in various aspects of ASCOL. This training also included many Windows and other functions that were necessary for staff to fully benefit from the computer systems.

  • Developed Network Users Guide for Melbourne Water staff. This covered Windows NT, Windows and associated applications.

(Management of Change)

The Management of Change group is part of Mobil Oil Australia Ltd's Australasian Core Business Systems (ACBS) venture, managing the implementation of SAP as Mobil's core business system. This includes training all Mobil Oil Australia and Mobil Oil New Zealand staff affected by the implementation of SAP.

Achievements - Dec 1993 to Feb 1995

  • Researched and produced the Assets Management User's Guide for version 5.0D of SAP.
  • Researched and produced (with other writer) the pre-production Capital Projects User's Guide for Phase II implementation of SAP.
  • Produced various quick reference cards for assets management and project management tasks.
  • Wrote and edited system, conceptual and detailed designs for the Project Management applications of SAP.
  • Produced process flow charts, function key maps and wall charts for transactions and systems.
  • Developed and maintained Management of Change team document templates, styles and macros in both Word 2.0 and Word 6.0.
  • Developed and maintained Management of Change team training templates in Powerpoint 3.0.
  • Trained all Management of Change team technical writers and support staff about Word (2.0 and 6.0), templates and macros.

Project AXIS is a service delivery system being developed by Cincinnati Bell Information Services (CBIS) for Telecom. AXIS will link various Telecom systems so that staff can prepare and action all service delivery tasks through one IBM 3270-based terminal.

Achievements - Dec 1992 to Dec 1993

  • Wrote and edited system specifications and other project and management documentation.
  • Analysed, researched and prepared technical and specification documents.
  • Developed new document layout and standards.
  • Prepared and delivered training courses and course materials for:
    • Introduction to Windows
    • Word for Windows
    • Better Writing
    • ABC Flowcharter.
  • Created an online reference system, including online phone list and glossary. This included dynamic links with charts and screenshows. This system served as a basis for an online library catalogue for the project.
  • Produced process flow charts, context diagrams and other illustrations.

Transfield Group Information Services/AMECON

Group Information Services provides computing and information resources for the whole Transfield Group of companies.

AMECON is wholly-owned by Transfield and is currently building two frigates for the Royal Australian Navy with contracts for another ten over the next fifteen years.

Achievements - April 1990 to Nov 1992

  • Developed a standard format for documents and AMECON forms.
  • Redesigned, rationalised and produced numerous forms used in computing, manufacture and quality control.
  • Completed various manuals and instructions, principally user guides for the VAX-based Document Control System and Configuration Control System.
  • Researched, prepared and produced computer, system and management documentation for a variety of users and platforms.
  • Prepared media release for the arrival of frigate project modules (carried by all major newspapers, ABC and 10-Network television news) and other Public Relations and Marketing work.
  • Produced (using GEM Publisher DTP) In-House newsletter for all AMECON employees.
  • Produced online Harvard Graphics screenshow, introducing Transfield Shipbuilding and its associated companies.
  • Produced organisation charts, entity relationship diagrams, posters and other illustrations.

The ANZ Cardholder Services National Support Centre controls operations for all ANZ card products, such as Bankcard, VISA and debit cards.

  • Initiated and produced national training newsletter.
  • Defined and set up on-line training environment (mainframe) for use by staff in all state areas.
  • Produced ANZPIMS manual for IBM IMS-based online system used to obtain account balances and details and for restricting card use after loss or theft.

Achievements - Sept 1988 to May 1989

  • Analysed and defined environments and procedures to fully test new or enhanced software.
  • Ran tests, checked and analysed results and reported variations from original requirements to Systems Development.
  • Was sole analyst responsible for testing online creation of Bank Control Files. (The BCF defines the processing rules, format and structure for each type of card such as VISA or Bankcard.)

ASTA was a Government-owned company with a world-class reputation for design and manufacture of aerospace products.

  • Prepared factory budgets, accounting for more than $100 million per annum and over 60 different work centres.
  • Analysed, defined and produced appropriate budgets for wages and salary costs, materials, expenses and workload.
  • Provided extensive, timely and appropriate reporting for all aspects of the various budgets.
  • Investigated variations from budget.
  • Performed cost benefit analyses and assisted with capital expenditure proposals.

  • Assisted authors (or, in many cases, myself) analyse and prepare documentation required for company operations (ranging from administrative, financial and purchasing activities to engineering and production tasks).
  • Monitored user requests for system change to ensure that the results matched requirements and that documentation and training was appropriate.
  • Investigated system problems and formulated solutions.
  • Prepared and wrote many procedures and manuals, for Burroughs and IBM mainframe systems as well as administrative, engineering and planning.
