BBB
is one of the leading youth community bands in Australia, with a long and unparalleled
record of success. The band was formed in 1992 by Craig Benjamin, (jazz
musician, composer, and band director), to provide an outlet for talented high school
musicians on the north shore. Its humble beginning was a one-hour a week rehearsal at a
local primary school with borrowed rhythm section instruments and no uniform.

From this beginning,
BBB has grown to include musicians of all ages from about 12 years of age,
up to members who are over 60 years old. The main focus for the members is
FUN and a love of music. We hold weekly rehearsals at a
Youth Centre (YOYOs) at Forestway Shopping
Centre (off Forest Way, Frenchs Forest) each Wednesday during school term,
commencing at 6:15 pm.
Currently, three bands
rehearse, the Jazz Orchestra from 6:30 - 8:00 pm and the Soul Band
alternating with GBB from 8:00pm - 9:30 pm. New members are made welcome. Typical instruments
include:
Flutes
Trumpets
Clarinets
Trombones
Saxophones
Rhythm and percussion
As the band is community-based, funding is made from fees charged each semester
plus any donations made to the bands playing at performances. Tours and travel
costs while holding performances are usually very cheap but the responsibility
of band members.
Each band has its own Band Director. For
the Jazz Orchestra (the starting point of talent in Benjamin's Big Bands), the
well known Sydney northshore Band Director, Mr Gerald Steinmann is in charge.
Gerald is a dynamic, encouraging director with many years of teaching ability to
numerous school bands. Gerald plays bass guitar, drums and sings but is
outstanding when in front of the orchestra.
The second band (Soul Band) has Angus Bullough as its Director. Angus is an accomplished musician with saxophone,
guitar, bass and drum expertise. He brings youth to the group and sets a high
standard for his band members to achieve.
