Andrew Robson is one of the most exciting saxophonists to have emerged in years, his alto offering unlimited colours. He has the command to make waves of tenor-like timbre, or tighten the sound into something piping, then sweeten it towards a smoke cured woodiness. He uses all this to create bubbling, joyous lines, seethinh with ideas.
In a masterstroke, he assembled the mighty rhythm section of Steve Elphick and Hamish Stuart, both towering players whose music comes straight from the heart. Elphick, an expert at making one note say more than two, bathes the bottom end in warmth, while Stuart brings an overriding sense of conviction to contexts which are alternately demandingly convoluted or very free.
But those contexts are always swinging and Robson's tunes have a melosic immediacy to connect at first listening. (four stars)
