The First Persian War: 490 BC - (Campaign of Darius I)

491 BC: Athens and Sparta kill Darius' Persian envoys.
490 BC: Persians sail through the Cyclades taking Naxos, Carystus and Eretria.
490 BC: Persian invasion force is defeated at the Battle of Marathon.

 

The Second Persian War: 480 BC - (Campaign of Xerxes I)

480 BC: Xerxes' immense invasion force marches against the Greek mainland.
480 BC: The Spartans fight the heroic defence at Thermopylae.
480 BC: The Persian navy is defeated at the Battle Salamis.
479 BC: Persians defeated at Plataea .
479 BC: Persians defeated at Mycale & the Persian fleet detroyed.

 

The Third Persian War: 478 BC - (Greeks go on the Offensive)

478 BC: Athenians besieged & captured Sestos, a key Hellespontine city.
478 BC: The Delian League formed.
478 BC: Greeks capture Cyprus, then Byzantium.
466 BC: The Persians are defeated in a naval battle off the Eurymedon River in Asia Minor.
465 BC: Artaxerxes becomes king of Persia after his father, Xerxes, is assassinated.
448 BC: Hostilities finally ending with the Peace of Callias.
