The Water Jet unit basic principles and the consequent benefits
Essentially a water jet drive is like an aircraft turbojet with the
difference that the operating fluid is the water instead of the air.
The propelling force is generated by accelerating a certain flow of
water in an astern direction.
Water flow from beneath the vessel is fed through an inlet duct mounted
at the transom flush to the hull bottom to an inboard pump (the impeller)
which transfers pressure and speed energy to the water. A movable
grid is fitted at the duct water inlet to protect the intake.
After the pump, the water flow passes through an integrated stator
blades and nozzle unit which remove the water swirling impressed by
the impeller and converts all the pressure energy into speed, discharging
a straight high speed water jet much higher than the boat speed.
This water acceleration creates the thrust of the water jet which
propels the boat.
Steering and reversing thrusts are generated by deflecting the jet
flow by means of directional deflector hydraulically operated.
Reversing thrust is achieved by deflecting the jet in a forward direction;
this is accomplished by means of a reversing deflector operating over
the steering one.
When the reversing deflector is placed in an intermediate neutral
position, the water flow is equalized.
In this way, a vertical neutral thrust can be achieved irrespective
of the pump speed resulting in zero forward and astern thrust which
maintains the boat standstill while full steering is available for
precise manoeuvring.
Forward, astern and side movements can be achieved merely by raising
and lowering the reversing deflector from the neutral position and
by moving the steering deflector.
As consequence there are some benefits typical and exclusive of the
water jet propulsion system such as:
SAFETY:
- Emergency crash-stop capability
- Absence of open rotating blades and of any appendage under
the hull
- Minimal damage susceptibility to floating debris and in
case of grounding
|
MANOEUVRABILITY:
|
- Great manoeuvrability at all speed
- Easier handling for docking (zero speed with high thrust
availability all around 360°)
- In multiple installations, vessel can move sideways
|
OTHERS:
- No interference in multiple installation
- Jets power absorption is insensitive to boats
speed. This means constant jet thrust at boat drag variation
- Operation in shallow water and beach landing capability
- Absence of vibrations and reduced internal noise
- Eco friendly
- Low underwater acoustic signature
- Low drag due to the absence of underwater appendages reducing
hull resistance
