My Way or the Highway
Well, I'm back after the Christmas break, and ready to go craaaazy. Sorry, got possessed by the spirit of Big Kev! Anyway, I was thinking about portal sites today. Portals are those sites that are perfectly suited to being web browser start pages, and can often be customised to your liking. My favourite one, at the moment, is My Yahoo. I know it's a pretty obvious one, but it is still one of the best, and also one of the few that can be customised for my region (Down Under, Oz). But a new site I discovered recently is My Way. This site is apparently not going to have ads, popups or any of the other annoying stuff that most other free sites have. Unfortunately it's completely USA-orientated, but still looks good. And you can customise it to check most of the common webmail accounts (Yahoo etc), which is a bonus. Remember, it's your web! TODAY on apb - Monday,December 23,2002
What's happening with Linux at my place?
What a strange question to ask. Anyway... after rebuilding Windows on one of my computers yet again, I've been checking out Linux options for some of the pc's on my home network. One of the nice ideas I came across was GNAT Linux, which is a tiny Linux distro that functions as a firewall only, and can run off a floppy. So you could install it on a computer with just a network card, modem and some memory. You wouldn't even need a hard drive! Weird huh? There are heaps of tiny versions of Linux out there, with lots of different uses. As long as you don't mind getting your hands dirty...
Ask a silly question...
You can get a lot of help on the web. And you can get a lot of crap too. So, where do you go when you to ask a question? Especially when it is about computers and the internet. My favourite forums are Woody's Lounge, run by Woody Leonhard and the team from the Woody's Watches. Stacked with experts and full of useful information, it is the place to go. The other great forum to check out is the new Lockergnome forums, run by the cool people at Chris Pirillo's Lockergnome. Now you have no excuse for not knowing who to ask!
