Simply Film Threat

It's surprising, given my love of movies, that I haven't featured this site before. The best and possibly the only truly independent voice in the cinema industry has to be Film Threat. Chris Gore and his team 'tell it like it is'. Their movie reviews are worth reading purely for the entertainment value, and more often than not, they are more entertaining than the films themselves! Their ezine is one of the best on the net, and it's free. For some truly bizarre reason, they have recently found themselves victims of a hacker attack, which disrupted their email service. It makes me wonder what is going on in people's tiny brains when hackers decide to disrupt a movie magazine. I mean, it's not like it's the Pentagon or anything... So, at this time, more than ever, Film Threat need people to subscribe to their email newsletter. Trust me, you won't be sorry!

Practically awesome

This is a bit nerdy, but if you have more than one computer at home, you might appreciate the info. Today's website is called Practically Networked, and it is a guide to all things networking. It really saved my bacon when I was trying to network my notebook and desktop computer, and set up internet connection sharing. And trust me, my bacon needs all the saving it can get! The How-To articles are great, and the Backgrounders section is also worth a read if you are considering a home network, but not quite ready yet. Plus, when it's finally time to take the plunge, you can read reviews of routers, hubs and all the other weird stuff that you might need.

What was that number again?

Do you have trouble remembering phone numbers? I mean, those ones that you actually have to remember. These days, with mobile phone address books and palmtop organisers, I find I can't actually remember anybody's number at all. Or maybe it's just the beers... Anyway, this website lets you convert any phone number to the equivalent letters, you know, the ones on top of the number keys. It even makes funny words. Really funny ones sometimes... You could even try it for codes and passwords you have to remember. Shhh, don't tell anyone.

Another night at the Opera

The big news this week is that Opera Software have released the beta version of Opera 7, the rebel web browser that is fast, lean, and much cooler than Internet Explorer. It's got a whole new rendering engine, smaller footprint, and a further improved interface. Even though it's a beta, it's worth checking out, especially if your computer is slow, or not quite state-of-the-art. Includes an email client, and instant messaging on the ICQ network.

So you think you are a selector?

I've just picked my Ashes cricket fantasy team, and entered it on the CricInfo website. My group is called 'Hotdogs' and if you want to pick a team, and join the group, go for it! The only problem is that you have to pick at least five English players. They are struggling to find five players at this stage of the tour! See if your team can beat mine...

Alex Ross Rules!

And now for something completely different. I was thinking about comics this morning, for a change, and decided that I might feature the website of one of the coolest comic book artists around. Alex Ross is an amazing artist whose 'photo-realistic' work has featured in everything from Batman and Superman, to the Oscars poster, to anime inspired comics like the new Battle of the Planets. Quite simply, he rocks! And his website looks great too. Check it out. Hmmm, that's quite a short article today, I might need to add another one later...

When you just gotta know

Well, no articles posted over the weekend, and I can't really claim to have been busy or anything. Just lazy, I suppose. Anyway, I finally got to try a sensational application that I reckon almost anybody would find useful at some stage. It's called Aida, and it's a system information tool. However, it is like no other sysinfo tool I've ever seen. It's so comprehensive, for a start. It will report on virtually every part of your computer, from the OS to the hardware. Things I didn't even know I wanted to know! This type of software is perfect when upgrading a computer, or checking if a new piece of software will run on your machine. Or you can use it to generate reports that you can give to support desk technicians when you run into problems. This is often the problem when people who aren't tech minded have to deal with support personnel, either in person or over the phone. The support person needs to know a particular bit of info about your system, but you don't know where to find it. Now, with Aida, you do!
