Now, that's a silly name!
Without question, one of the funniest websites I have ever come across is this one. It's devoted to molecules with silly or unusual names, and they are all real! Written by a chemist (who said scientists were boring?), it collects all the molecules, elements and chemicals that have slightly bizzare, rude or funny names. Just check it out, it is definitely not as boring as it sounds! While I'm talking about weird stuff, it reminds me of The Brunching Shuttlecocks, who certainly win the award for one of the strangest webpage titles on the internet. Be warned, they can be rude, crude and strangely alluring. But never dull... There are reviews, video clips, random links, and something they call 'diversions'. Now, that is a worry! And now for something completely different
The 1st cricket test between Australia and England has started, so productivity in my office will drop to virtually nothing for a while. Excellent! So, I thought I'd feature one of the weirdest, wackiest websites I've ever seen. It's Stick Death, and it is crazy! This site is dedicated to the demise of stick men. I don't mean people who use sticks (or goal umpires!). I mean those drawings of stick people that we used to draw when we were very young. But we definitely didn't draw them like this. Or maybe you did, I dunno... Anyway, it's bizzare, but worth a look. Warning - very heavy on the plugins. Shockwave, Java, etc. And not very politically correct. For a slightly less violent, and a little more cerebral humour, check out Ironic Times. This is the newspaper that we should really get every morning. Sly, sarcastic and clever. Quite the opposite of Stick Death... TODAY on apb - Wednesday,November 06,2002
Favorites, Bookmarks, Hotlists and whatever else...
I did some work yesterday on my Links page, and on the associated Hotlist page. Occasionally I will convert my Hotlist (which is what Opera calls it's Favorites) to HTML, and then post it as a webpage to my site. I find this useful so that if I am at someone else's computer, and I can't remember a website that's in my Hotlist, I can just surf over to that page and look it up. It's long, dull, and possibly full of broken links, but at least it's there. Consider posting your own favorites list to the internet, maybe just using Yahoo! Geocities or some other free webspace. You might find it useful. Or not... Now, maybe you are wondering what cool program I use to perform this magical feat? It's an application I've had for ages, and is just so cool. It's called Columbine Bookmark Merge, and although it takes a bit of getting used to, it's well worth the effort. It has a kinda funny way of opening and saving files, but apart from that, it get's the job done. You can convert to and from Opera, Netscape or Internet Explorer favorites, and also to HTML using different templates. It's great if you use more than one browser on your machine. Check it out! Or for a quick and dirty way to convert favorites to HTML, use Internet Explorer's 'Export' feature. Click File | Import and Export, and then follow the wizard. A new way to keep an eye on things...
Well, just as soon as I had written yesterday's entry, I managed to find a new service that will allow you to sign up, and receive an email every time this page changes. Seems pretty good, let's see how it works. It's called Change Detection, and I've only had it running since last night, so if someone (anyone) could sign up and let me know how it works, that would be nice... Don't forget that this main page only shows the last week's worth of entries. After that, older entries are archived, but can still be accessed just like the main page. I think I need to make it more obvious how to get to the main page from the archive, and vice versa, but I'm still trying to decide how to do that. Time for a random dip into my Opera Hotlist. As a news junkie, I love sites that collect news from all over the place. Today's Front Pages is just that. As they state on the main page, it features "139 front pages from 24 countries". It's a little slow to load, naturally, and it does use pop-up windows (but not unwanted ones), but it's worth it. Read a different newspaper today! TODAY on apb - Monday,November 04,2002
Where did all my day go?
Spectacularly boring day at work today, the highlight was when I scanned a photo for someone and cropped out their boyfriend who was pulling a silly face! Yeah, my day rocks. For your information, I used IrfanView to resize, crop and resample the image, after scanning it with a Canon scanner. IrfanView is small, fast and compact, alot like Opera web browser, and is definitely worth checking out. I've also learned a bit about CSS and modifying link appearances on webpages. Maybe you've noticed that the links on this page turn red now, with an overline and underline. How exciting! Harold Hark was kind enough to let me know that the Netmind service appears to have gone to internet heaven. Pity, it was a great way to track when webpages change. So, sorry to all the people who signed up to have my page monitored. I have almost got an email digest version of this blog set up, so feel free to let me know if you'd be interested. And if you know of a good site that emails users when webpages change, I'd love to hear about it. Hello? Anybody out there? TODAY on apb - Sunday,November 03,2002
Long live the Gonzo Online Journalist
It's pretty late, and I've been making beer all day. Plus drinking some too, but that's okay... I've been tweaking the appearance of this site, but my internet connection keeps dropping. That's the price you pay for living in the bush. No broadband here, folks. Anyway, it's about time I mentioned an online journalist and personal friend of mine, Harold Hark. His highly political website, SCATT, is definitely worth a look, if you have some desire to take the moral high ground. Or something like that... He's also very funny, and has written two great unpublished novels. If Harold is too much to handle, then check out Crikey. It's philosophy is "...to point out theft, corruption, deception and collusion whenever and wherever it can... and at all times try to have fun". Now, that's classy!
