A night at the Opera

Fantastic day today in Hobart, and I'm feeling rather sleepy after my nice sushi lunch at Orizuru. I've been mucking around with this site all week, and I thought I better let people know what software is sitting on my computer. First, and obviously most importantly, the site is driven by Blog. A fantastic application that works like Blogger, only it resides locally on your computer. I love it!

As most people already know, I am a big fan of Opera, the web browser that's just too cool. It is a great browser, not a lightweight, but small in size compared to the effort from Microsoft. And it's a good email client, plus it will chat on the ICQ network. Nice...

Speaking of chat clients, I prefer to use Miranda, which is a very small app that works like ICQ, but also has a plugin to allow it to chat with MSN Messenger users. Check it out.

Another fine start to the day

I'm a bit lacking in inspiration today. Just hanging out for the weekend, but I've got a busy Friday ahead of me. So, I thought I'd write about the 'morning websites' - the ones that give me the information I need, when I need it. Hmmm, sounds like a commercial, doesn't it? Anyway, mornings demand news - and coffee - and my first stop is ABC News. Good for the news, but doesn't help with the coffee. Next, I check out Melbourne newspaper, The Age, which is a great read, whether online or in dead tree form. And finally, I'll have a look at Yahoo! Australia News, mostly for the syndicated international news. After that, of course, I'll have a 'glance' at eBay Australia. Because you never know!

It's just not cricket...

Well, cricket season is well and truly upon us, and that means lovely summer days trying to avoid work and get infront of a telly to check out Australia giving the Poms a fair whacking. But sometimes it's not possible to actually watch the game live. I mean, occasionally I have to actually do work, at work! Rude, I know, but that's how it is. So, the dilemma - how to follow the scores without having to resort to a radio tuned to ABC Sport (which tends to annoy clients and bosses). My first choice is always the Cricket Matchlet at Howzat.net.au. It's a great wagon wheel type Java applet, and updates really quick. Otherwise you can go to the ubiquitous Baggygreen which is simply the Australian front-end to the awesome Cric-Info site. And finally, there's always Yahoo! Sport Cricket, which also contains links to news articles from across the world. Go Warnie!

Where do you get it?

It's probably a good time to let all my valued readers (both of you) know where I get all my cool software from. And where I go when I need an application in a hurry. I reckon you can't beat Web Attack for downloadable freeware and shareware. Naturally, it's always worth checking CNET's Download.com, but for a concise collection of quality downloads, you should check out Web Attack. Did I say concise? What a crock, they have HEAPS of stuff, and it's all good. I would also strongly recommend you read their great article on spam. It's in the editorials, dude...

So, that's how it works!

Does anyone remember the series of "How it Works" books? I had heaps of them, and along with The Curiosity Show, they were my major source of knowledge as a kid. Now, that probably explains alot... Anyway, you should do yourself a favour and check out HowStuffWorks but be warned - you'll need plenty of spare time, cos this site is awesome. You can read interesting articles on how everything works. And I mean everything! Go on, you name it, they got it. One of the most enjoyable web resources that I have ever seen.

Reasonably Silly, more like it

Despite my best intentions, the first useful post to this website is silly. Naturally. I played with Lego as a kid. Lots of Lego. In fact, I had enough Lego to build a lifesize Holden Gemini, only better looking. Surprisingly enough, I never actually did that... Anyway, if you have ever dreamed about being a Lego person, and you're not lucky enough to be Ray Martin, get yourself over to Reasonably Clever.com and go for it. I always liked the spaceman helmet, myself.
