Day 2 - Climb to Camp 1 (5100m)

24 Jul 2007

Today we set off for Camp 1, our packs loaded up with our climbing gear. The donkeys came no further than base camp. Most of the climbing involved walking or scrambling up smooth rock slabs until we reached the permanent snow at an altitude of about 5000m. From here it was easy cramponing up the gentle snow slope to Camp 1. There was no need even for an ice axe on these lower snow slopes. We reached the camp by mid afternoon, which allowed time to enjoy the views and spectacular ice formations.
