North Fort road

nheadwalks2 (135K) If you are in a hurry to get to the coffee at Bella Vista, near North Fort, North Fort Road makes good sense. You will definitely see some of the many wildflowers that we have.

echidna trim 1030453 (163K) You need to be aware that there are some service vehicles on the road, but these usually move at a sedate pace, though the same cannot be said for some of the bicycles that use the road.

The main thing, though, is that the road is a bit dull and boring, when just to the west there is a carefully crafted walk-way that takes you through much more interesting country, to amazing views, and more chances to see wild life.

Just off the road, about 3 metres along the steel track at Node 1, you may find an echidna like this one on the right. We know of around 20 of these animals on North Head, but you have to keep your eyes open.

On North Fort Road, as you head up the hill through the traffic control bollards, you can see several experimental patches on the right, where rabbits are blocked from access. As part of long-term scientific studies, these plots were recently cut back, to see what will happen if we use fire protection to keep wild fires away from buildings. It hurt to do it, but the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub bounced back, we now know that we can grow it close to buildings and trim it.

Further away from the road, a large burnt patch which has been fenced against rabbits, and this also is part of an experiment: please stay outside all of the rabbit fences. From the highest point, there's a steel track leading to nicer places, but if food, coffee and thne Fairfax Loop are your targets, head on downhill.
