Sutherland Group

The Sutherland Group of Australian Plants Society is an active group that meets ten times per year, contributes to State and National Society events and proceedings and organises many local activities.

Meetings

The Group meets every month except December and January.

Third Wednesday of each month at 8.00pm.

LOCATION: Gymea Community Hall, 39 Gymea Bay Road, Gymea (map).

Each meeting generally has the following format

• introduction by the Group President
• guest speaker on an interesting topic (see upcoming speakers or the full 2009 program.)
• quick run down on upcoming events
• short "cameo talk" eg how to propagate plants, things in my garden, recent walks or trips
• "plant table"
• an inexpensive raffle to win potted native plants (supplied by Ausplants)
• supper and chat

Plant Table

The "Plant Table" is a session in the meeting where the "Plant Table Host", Phil Keane, identifies and discusses the cut flowers brought in by members or guests. This is a useful way to help identify a plant you weren’t sure about, show off the successes of your garden, or just to listen and learn about the growing habit of particular plants, how easy they are to grow, and propagate, etc. Some of the flower stems can also provide useful cuttings for those wishing to propagate the plant.

The aims and objectives of the Australian Plants Society are:

• To foster and promote appreciation, study and participation in growing and propagating Australian native plants
• To foster support and promote the preservation and conservation of Australian native plants
• To encourage the use of Australian native plants in home gardens and public places
• To improve the use of Australian native plants in home gardens and public places
• To interest the nursery industry in propagating and supplying Australian plants to the public
• To increase and disseminate general knowledge of Australian native plants.
