Author Study: Eric Carle
Sample lesson for R – 3 students
The Eric Carle web site is a gold mine of ideas and activities. It is well worth taking the time to explore this site and the related Eric Carle sites at your
leisure. The following activity is suitable for capable readers to complete independently. Younger children will need adults to read the information to them.
It is an author study that focuses on developing children's information gathering and report writing skills. The task assumes prior knowledge of Eric Carle
and his books.
Task
Your job is to make a book about Eric Carle. You will need to go to the Eric Carle web site at:
http://www.eric-carle.com/
1. Click on ‘answers to frequently asked questions’ at the bottom of the home page.
2. You will see a list of the 29 questions Eric Carle is most asked. Choose 5 that you would like to know the answer. Write
each question on a separate page.
3. Now, click on each question and read, or get a grown up to read the answers Eric Carle has given. Write down the answer in your own words. You
don't have to write down every thing he says, just get the general idea!
4. Get an adult to conference your work and then make a little book with this conferenced work.
5. Give your book a title page. Perhaps you could use
collage to do this.
