In understanding the possibility of seeing all reality within
a 'person paradigm' rather than purely a 'matter and energy'
paradigm, is necessary to clarify just what personhood means, and
understand personhood as something broader than merely human
personhood.
This can be difficult, where there is no conception of
'person' other than the human person, and where there is an
dominant individualistic framework, and an inadequate
understanding of functioning corporate realities (e.g such as
those understood by Australian Aboriginal cultures).
An incorrect understanding of personhood will result in a
confusing a paradigm that defines reality as sourced and existing
in personhood as either anthropomorphist and/or animistic.
Anthropomorphism – pertains to
‘human’ not person. For example when looking at
Wisdom, if one only understands personhood (and indeed the
feminine) in the context of the human person, a charge of
anthropomorhism would be quite reasonable. Human metaphors
can be useful, but are limitted if we attribute the
chatracteristics in question only to humans. From a Christian
perspective neither personhood or the feminine is archtypically
human. Neither personhood or femininity are 'concepts'
unique to or souced in humanity, both are sourced in God.
Animism, is often a perjorative term, and carries
sufficient emotional stigma within modern Western consciousness
for it to be dismissed without a hearing. Animism is
differentiated from broader personhood, however, by its inference
of an attribution of an individuated thinking, feeling,
desiring ‘soul’ to specific objects and
phenomena. Animism is a narrow version of personhood.
1 Personhood is a much broader
concept than humanity
(most Christians would grant that personhood at least encompasses
humans, angels, Father, Son and Holy Spirit etc)
2 Personhood is a corporate concept
(i.e. just as humanity is not confined to or defined by
individual humans, neither is personhood confined to individual
persons).
This Full personhood has to do with a free will and awareness,
(an otherness) incorporating an Inside
hearing, and a speaking out from that inside.
Personhood is enriched where the speaking and hearing of ideas
are clearly sourced and rooted in person. Communicating ideas as
personal communion not data flow. Ideas perceived
to their personal source.
To hear is to allow space for an idea 'inside' where it can
speak itself freely.
Human personhood also has the unique
capacity for symbolic reference, or language, which should not be
accepted as a given when considering broader personhood.
Humans are capable of re-patterning ideas perceived within
according to their will, and the nature of the ideas patterning.
The new idea conceived can then be spoken out as a corporate
identity or group of ideas united in the central idea of the
person conceiving. In other words humans have the a capacity for
speaking Other than the word of who they are.
The Bible speaks of spirit, soul, and body
in describing human personhood.
Martin Buber makes useful
comments on how creation other than humanity can be understood as
participating in the fundamental 'I-you' relationship. (see
