The Votaries of the Blue Flower

The Votaries of the Blue Flower were a loosely affiliated group which included C S Lewis,
J R R Tolkein , and Charles Williams.

The 'Blue Flower' was a symbol drawn from (the German Romantic author Baron Friedrich von Hardenberg) Novalis'  partially completed work 'Heinrich von Ofterdingen'.  The Blue Flower represented a transcendent reality that had to do with the richness and meaning of life.

Whilst having difficulty expressing this certain 'quality', C S Lewis found the closest word was 'joy'.
