BRADY HARRIS - SUNDAY SHINING

This is a very interesting forerunner to Brady's forthcoming release, which will apparently be mid 1999. Brady is a US based musician, who has gone through a succession of projects, to end up performing solo on an earlier album called Next Door To Nowhere, which found praise among quite a number of music press.

This is a cool single, which the title track has an excellent upvibe groove that many will find irresistable & is perfect radio add material for just about any range of stations, except for the most jaded commercial stations. It not only has an excellent vocal style, but the backing is pretty cool too.

Perhaps even more interesting are the included demo tracks, particularly "Anthrax Blues" & "All Of You Suck", which both have a real 'down south' sound to them & the vocals are quite amazing. I'm looking forward to hearing a whole album of material from Brady, should be an interesting listen.

DANIEL DONAHOO - (SELF TITLED)

Victorian based artist Daniel Donahoo bills himself as someone who 'sings songs & stories' & a more apt description could basically not be found & think. His music is simple & honest & his knack of relating a story through his songs is excellent.

Primarily, this 6 track demo tape takes the form of people like Paul Kelly's songwriting skills, sung to the backing of acoustic guitar, which is where most artists try to start their songs from.

A very interesting track called "Breaking & Entering" is second in, which starts off with a ery simple melody & you're not immediately drawn to the song, but once the lyrics start, you're sort of drawn into the story, which is something many songwriters try a long time to do.

Opener "Be Alright" & "Song For A Good Man" are both good highlights & excellent examples of Daniel's musical abilities & while the overall style doesn't impact immediately, it's with the storytelling that he excels.

DAVID HARBUCK - THE TROUBADOUR

A very interesting album from US based artist David Harbuck is certainly not quite what I'd expected. Primarily the album is driven by a fair bit of acoustic guitar tinged at times with a country influence. David has also included a copy of his earlier album 9 Songs & A Picture, so as to compare his newer material with what he's come up with currently.

Totalling 10 songs in all, The Troubadour shows a lot of work has gone into the songwriting aspect, plus the performance also shows significant improvement. The album opens up with a song called "Molly", which is strangely open & yet introspective at the same time.

Other impressive tracks here include "In On The Outside", which is perhaps my favourite track alongside "Whhiskey", plus the title track & "In Your Eyes". Apart from the great vocal style here, the excellent acoustic guitar playing scattered throughout gives a good listening atmosphere. Those into good singer/songwriters, will really enjoy this album.

DOMINIQUE LOUP - ETUDES ROMANTIQUES

A classical composer & artist from Geneva, Dominique Loup presents the debut release, consisting of material which is inspired by 18th century classical music which in this case was classed as Romanticism.

With well over an hour of music here, there's most certainly something here to satisfy lovers of classical music. Although not something I can say is for me, I can appreciate the time & talent necessary to produce music of any description.

The album appears to have been recorded with the assistance of modern computer music software & the production is outstanding as is the sound quality. While classical music ios largely ignored by younger people these days, there is a sizeable listening audience for it & as such, this will suit anyone interested in the genre.

MORGAN GUBERMAN - TORPOR

About the only thing predictable about listening to music is that no one release from any artist is going to be the same. So it is with Morgan Guberman's music, having already forwarded one prior release for review.

This latest album, contains over 70 minutes of Morgan's fairly minimalist musings via an instrument called the ccontrabass. The music again is as challenging as the last album, which was titled Hamadryas Baboon.

Throughout the album, you'll be tested quite readily on almost every track, while the most recognisable style is a traditional jazz hybrid of sorts called "One's Own Movings".

Many of the songs are exceptionally short, with some less than a minute, while others like "Tellurium & Bromine" take the other end of the scale, maxing out at the 11 minute mark. Probably about the easiest description would be to compare Morgan's music to the art world & impressionism in particular. The shapes are there, but you just can't quite make them out.

NICKI FLUX - WHEN THE RAIN BEGINS TO FALL

Now based in San Francisco, Australian born Nicki Flux has ben performing for quite a few years, starting singing studies at age 7. Earlier in her career, Nicki also competed heavily in track & field, also bodybuilding, before turning her talents more directly to music.

Nicki's influences are reasonably diverse, crossing the gap between Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey & Nicki herself cites George Benson as a pretty big influence, never more noticeable than on the closing track "If I Don't Know Her Name", which is an excellent example of R & B.

Opening up the 5 track ep is an unusual cover version of Mariah Carey's "Emotions", surprisingly short, though the highlight of the ep is a track she cowrote with Mark Knopfler called "There'll Be Other Nights". Nicki is certainly an interesting artist who'll be making her mark over her next couple of release I think.

ORPHEUS - A LITTLE DEMONSTRATION

Although a couple of years old now, this debut album for Sydney 4 piece Orpheus takes the time to be a much more than a simple demo album, having already sold just under 1,000 copies with little to no promotion.

Superb production for the album assists in it's listenability, with some great & very varying syles throughout, though none conflict & it's a painless journey from beginning to end.

Opener "You Don't Have To Lead Me On" is a fair indication of what's to come, with a great pecussion section & a cool vocal performance out front. This track also appears unlisted at the close of the album, with a less aggressive sound, the percussion pared back & the wonderful keyboard section coming out a little more.

Particularly interesting is a track called "Ride Me", which the band take on with a pretty in your face rock sound, the lead guitar takign a different sound than much of the rest of the album. Favourite moment of all here is the cool piano section finishing up Come A Little Closer", which reminds me more than a little of that great moment on the end of Faith No More's classic track Epic.

Last but not least is the other very notable closer "Never Find It", which layers on an extra vocal section doing backing & you're treaed to an equally upvibe sound as the best moments on the album. The band are about to release their second album The Wonder Years shortly, so I'll be interested to see how the band have moved on from where they were on this album.

PROVAN - ACT LIKE YOU'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE

A band coming out of New York, Provan have one hell of a cool ep consisting of 6 tracks, each one a gem. A 4 piece, the band's sound could easily draw a number of comparisons, but those who love the sound of Bob Moul'ds Sugar will have found another very good melodic rock replacement.

Each of the songs here, especially that of the opening track "Superbuick" have a slightly off kilter groove that works so well. The sound is generally driven by a great guitar section, but the vocals also assist in the very cool sound.

Probably the song that most will identify with is the extremely poppy "She's In Demand" which would be a killer radio single but I'd also have to say that I love both "Red Shirt" & "2000 Steps".

With a wealth of musical experience behind them, including members having played with Sonic Youth, The Bad Seeds, Spent & Muttonhead, it's little wonder that the sound is so amazing. As yet, I'm not sure whether the band have any other material released, but I'm certainly seeing where else the band's music is headed.
