THE ALMIGHTY GRIND - (SELF TITLED)

A pretty cool 5 tracker from this very promising Californian based outfit, which from the read of the bio, contains 6 members. The sound is a sort of cross between the sound of cool hip hop acts like Public Enemy or perhaps Ice Cube & the more edgy rock feel of Korn & to a certain extent, Limp Bizkit.

It was a pretty easy pick for me to pick the brilliant "Little Fly", which really has a great groove. The rock is a little less aggressive on this track, but it's the one that appealed the most to me, closely followed by "Time To Shine" & "Miracle", while closer "Sun God" shows promise, but never quite delivers the killer edge that seems to be lurking. Great stuff, fronted by a very good vocalist & some pretty solid instrumental backing.

HOLLYDRIFT - IN THESE DAYS OF MERRIMENT

I know little about this particular act, other than it appears to be the solo work of Matthias Anderson, coming out of the US.If you like sampled material, you'll feel right at home here, as this isn't an album full of music, more a listening experience, with sounds & mutated speech, combined with many other noises.

Probably the most interesting of the tracks here is "Floating On The Bellcross", which has a truly gothic sort of atmosphere, while on other tracks like "Donner Pass", there are a whole pile of very different things going on. This particular project would probably best be described as suitable for soundtrack work. Interesting nonetheless.

LUDE - WELCOME TO THE LOVESHACK

Anyone thinking that there might be something remotely akin to US band B52s after reading the title, can pretty much forget that & think more along the lines of Black Flag or similar seminal punk & hard core outfits for want of a better comparison.

The band lack no enthusiasm & neither do they lack anywhere near the energy of some of the punk outfits that come to mind, but they lack reasonable recording or production, because the sound quality suffers quite severely here, especially given the cheap technology that's available.

Primarily it's the vocals that suffer most, with the album sounding quite a bit like you're at a pub with a bad PA system. There are a couple of very interesting numbers, particular the closer "Bass Solo", which is something quite different, as well as "T-Sex" & my pick "Pipebomb". I'd say the talent is there, but they need to be able to translate that to a recording for best effect.
