McCRAE, J.C. of Fifield via Trundle NSW, wrote in 1938 re his boys Les and Vincent who had been staying with their aunt Mrs. PENFOLD at Richmond, Victoria, and who had ill treated them.  5 pages, List 2.

McCULLAGH, Richard St Leger Barton.  Father John wrote in 1877; he was 19 yrs of age and supposed to be working in the country, but was worried as he hadn’t heard for some months.  7 pages, List 5.

McDONALD, Mrs Henry, wrote from Petone NZ in 1905 re a newspaper report of a man found dead in the bush at Beaumaris, originally identified by John RUXTON as John McDONALD, , but he was subsequently found alive.  Her husband is in Australia somewhere, she has not heard from him for about 12 years, and wonders if this is him.  He had a brother John.  11 pages, List 11.

MADIGAN, Mrs.  Anonymous letter in 1918 claiming her confectionery and refreshment shop at 36 Glenferrie Rd. Malvern was used for gambling purposes.  She was a widow; her married daughter Mrs. SAVAGE and two children lived with her, her husband was at the war.  Police report there was no sign of gambling, but ‘the lads frequent the place for something else besides supper’.  Madigan subsequently sells to William SYMONDS.  6 pages, List 3.

MAGILL, Miss H.  ‘Westella’ Canterbury Rd., St. Kilda, knocked over by cyclist Mark KEMPTON in Melbourne in 1898; file on case. 8 pages, List 7

MAHONY, Martin Francis.  Charged with carnal knowledge on Irene Daisy KILEY at Shepparton in 1914.  Incomplete file.  12 pages, List 3.

MAIS, Harold Clement alias ANDREWS.  Failed to pay maintenance to M.T. DRAPER at Rushworth in 1918; brought back from Qld to face court, and promised to marry her, but ran away again.  He was an engineer.  16 pages, List 3.

MALAM, Ed. Writes from Menzies Western Australia in 1897, asking police to confirm background of his wife Alvena Elizabeth Annie (Addie) BURFORD, is divorcing her.

MANCEY, John, wrote from Launceston Tasmania in 1898.  His 15 year old son Richard John had taken ship to Melbourne; gives physical description and asks police to put him on a ship back there.  4 pages, List 7.

MEADOWS, Phemmy. Illegitimate child, adopted by Mrs. Emily MORLEY in 1891, but died. Morley came from Islington NSW, lives in a Melbourne brothel and had two illegitimate children herself, who died. She has left her husband.

MELBOURNE FREE CONCERTS. File re supposedly free concerts given on Sundays in 1894, but for which entrance fees were asked. Frank M. Clark, manager of the Grand Rational Concerts prosecuted for insulting language to undercover police who were monitoring them as against government regulation to charge on Sundays. Several flyers listing performers on file; all names listed have been placed on this webpage. 26 pages.

MERRILEES, Allen McDonald. R. SIMPSON of Freemantle Western Australia wrote in 1899 on behalf of the wife of this man. He married Mary Eliza SIMPSON in South Australia in 1896, was a seaman, left in December 1897 and hasn't returned. They have seen a newspaper report of the death of a seaman named Allen McDonald who is believed to have jumped overboard and drowned, and her husband used this name. Police find it is a different person. 6 pages, List 2.

MITCHELL, George Charles.  Wrote from Coolgardie Western Australia in 1906.  On a ship back to Australia recently, he was told by an elderly passenger that poisoned rabbits were sold for human consumption at Bacchus Marsh in Victoria; writes to warn department.  Police decline to act unless he names informer, but he refuses.  4 pages, List 3.

MITCHELL, John alias Charles THURGOOD or McKIE. Escaped from Ararat gaol in 1917, charged with false pretences. Had previous convictions in N.S.W. and Victoria. Born 1884 England, a journalist. Listing of his possessions which were sold by police. 19 pages.

MOLONY, J. D.  A solicitor in Forbes N.S.W., he wrote in 1906 seeking police help in finding the death of Mary Ann FLANAGAN nee KEALY, who was first married to Charles EDWARDS in Yass in 1853, and had a daughter Mrs. LEGGE at Granya, and died there.  Legge reports that her mother was Mrs. EDDY nee CALDWELL, but Molony writes that she was not married to Eddy.  13 pages, List 4.

MOORE, Delia of Newtown Sydney, wrote in 1905 re her husband John, who had deserted her and their young baby, and had left her 9 year old daughter Winnie with a Mrs J.H. McDONALD in St. Kilda.  McDonald’s husband worked on ships; she traced to Sydney.  10 pages, List 3.

MOORE, Mrs. Sarah, a widow of Jeffcott Nth near Donald, complained in 1918 that someone was annoying her at night.  She lived alone, on 160 acres.  Her brother James STRICKLAND, at Billery via Coonamble NSW is informed of police investigations.  10 pages, List 3.

MORTENSEN, Hans.  Employed as nightwatchman at river widening works at Heyington in 1930, an explosion occurred in the hut he occupied.  The foreman of the works was John BRASHER and the contractor G.W. VAUGHAN.  6 pages, List 4.

MURPHY, Thomas Joseph. Wife Bridget wrote from Berrigan, NSW in 1908. He, under the name of CARMODY, lived there about a year with another woman, but sent her away when Bridget returned. She subsequently found out about the other woman, the pair quarrelled and he cleared out, leaving her destitute. She is crippled, has lost one of her hands etc. Three of his children are kept by Victorian State government.

NELSON, Sarah. Mother died at Geelong, father left four children in Orphan Asylum. Sarah in service in Melbourne; alleged seduction of 15 year old Christine by Harry JEFFERYS, a sailor on the Cerebus, 1885.

NETHERSOLE, C.W. Series of letters in 1915 re Oliver MARKS, whose wife and child left him and went to the country. His daughter Dora took out a maintenance order, but Marks absconded. Nethersole critical of slowness of police action.

NEVINS, Wilton.  A commercial traveller living in Camberwell, he was robbed by Stanley WITHEL, a friend of his domestic servant Annie SIMPSON in1913.  File includes letter of thanks from Nevins.  13 pages, List 8.

PATTERSON, Alexander.  Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children reports that he has illtreated a child named Bertie RICKETTS at Mornington in 1898.  Police report.  5 pages, List 3.

PATTERSON, David. Complains in 1919 that the woman he married in 1917, Agnes McWHINNIE, committed bigamy as her first husband was still alive when they married. Two marriage certificates on file, one with Patterson, the other with Albert Edwin SHEPPERD. Patterson described as 'eccentric'. 16 pages.

RAY, Frederick Arthur Theodore, of Footscray, wrote to friend and former resident Gerald McCARTHY in New York in 1917, giving local news, and using ‘indecent language’.  Not clear, but appears letter was opened as McCarthy could not be found.  Ray subsequently interviewed by detectives and charged under the Postal Act.  Letter on file and very crude language used.  List 3.

RAYMOND, Samuel.  Charles Hamilton STERNE enquired for his address on behalf of a friend in London, 1869.  Details of Raymond, (was formerly in Vic police force) and two letters from him, on file.  17 pages, List 4.

READ, Alice.  Wrote from Brisbane in 1908.  She had divorced her husband Joseph for adultery with her sister, who had a child to him.  Alice given custody of her son Jack Bertram Read, but Joseph has taken him away to Melbourne.  12 pages, List 5.

REARDON, Charles Philip of Tocumwal, NSW, wrote in 1919.  He was a wounded returned soldier and sought help in finding his parents Elizabeth and Patrick Kilday Reardon as he needed his birth certificate and the Registrar General had no record of it.  Found.  7 pages, List 3.
