Native Plants I Have Tried To Grow
Both gardens are in an area with subtropical climate (and no frosts) - mine is better drained and on sandstone, while mum's is more loamy I think and possibly has some clay in bits.
In My Garden
- Acacia cognata'Green Mist' (starting to grow)
- Acacia myrtifolia (x2)

- Acacia ulicifolia (planted 3. Fussy for right spot in ground)
- Allocasuarina littoralis (in pot, preparing for bonsai)
- Allocasuarina torulosa (RIP - in pot, preparing for bonsai, died after hot spell)
- Angophora hispida (RIP - grew 20cm in 2 years in bad spot)
- Anigozanthos "Bush Gem" (some ink spots)
- Banksia aculeata (2 seeds planted..both germinated after 5 months over summer, 1 died soon after)
- Banksia aemula (RIP-. always struggled for some reason. Had some sooty mould. In a bad part of garden where everything died)
- Banksia baueri(x2) (RIP-never grew fast, but always green, but suddenly died)
- Banksia baxteri (RIP - in a pot, was growing well, but died since major wet spell in November)
- Banksia blechnifolia (RIP - suddenly after wet spell in summer. Grew steadily for 3 months, then stopped.Ive also planted a seed which took 6 weeks to germinate)
- Banksia brownii (RIP)
- Banksia brownii, grafted onto B. integrifolia 01/00 - plenty of new growth
- Banksia caleyi (2 seedlings germinated. both died in a summer heatwave)
- Banksia canei(on a south facing wall, lots of new growth)
- Banksia coccinea(RIP - long, slow death)
- Banksia dryandroides (x2) - prefers being in ground.
- Banksia ericifolia "white candles" (growing OK, 1 flower in 1st season, 3 in 2nd)
- Banksia "Giant Candles" (doing well, likes iron)
- Banksia marginata "mauve"(RIP - always lacked vigour, died after being transplanted in summer)
- Banksia media (RIP - in pot, new growth, then went yellow and died)
- Banksia nutans (x2)(RIP - suddenly after wet spell in summer. Grew well initially)
- Banksia paludosa paludosa (x2)(growing slowly but steadily)
- Banksia paludosa astrolux (1 out of 10 seeds germinated after 5-6 weeks (??)
- Banksia plagiocarpa (x2 - both have new growth, 1 died in record time from phosphorus, 2nd stolen)
- Banksia praemorsa (growing OK in elevated bed)
- Banksia robur (x2)(doing well, both grew almost 2m in 14 months or so - each will have had 1 flower in 2nd year in ground after being bought as 8 inch pot - one flowered in August, both by the October)
- Banksia serrata (growing steadily now, occasionally looked unhealthy for about 18 months or so. Bought a 2nd plant for bonsai-type growth - died in wet)
- Banksia solandri grafted onto B. integrifolia 01/00 (new growth)
- Banksia speciosa (RIP after wet spell. grew fast, then stopped, then grew again)
- Banksia spinulosa collina(doing well, likes iron - flowering after 2.5 years, 11 blooms on one, 1 on the other - larger one is still only 1.5m though)
- Banksia spinulosa "Birthday Candles" (doing well after foliage browning off in winter, no flowers in 2nd winter, 2 in third)
- Banksia spinulosa "lemon glow" (new growth)
- Banksia spinulosa neoanglica (planted a seed...)
- Banksia spinulosa spinulosa (planted 9 seeds, none germinated, even in hothouse; 3 cuttings of not too healthy plant all died, 2 other cuttings still green but no roots after 2 months)
- Brachysema latifolium (starting to grow)
- Bulbine bulbosa (x3) (do well with extra moisture, self seeding if not too many weeds about)
- Chamaelaucum uncinatum "Early Purple" (In pot-growing steadily, flowered for two years so far)
- Commelina cyanea (naturally growing, in small colonies)
- Correa alba (RIP-supplanted by a rose that I thought had died)
- Correa baeuerlenii (RIP in hot, humid spell)
- Correa 'Dusky Bells' (planted in elevated sandy bed in half shade, new growth in summer)
- Correa reflexa(growing well - a few flowers in 1st winter)
- Dianella caerulea(growing OK)
- Dillwynia retorta (RIP - was trodden on by wandering child early after planting out. Never recovered)
- Eucalyptus macrocarpa (in wine barrel under west-facing awning; donig OK, growing slowly)
- Eucalyptus robusta (in pot in preparation for bonsai)
- Gardenia ovularis(was in a pot, now in ground - hates being transplanted, starting to grow. Went quite yellow over winter despite iron & nitrogen)
- Gardenia scabrella(RIP - in same part of garden as sick looking Wallum Banksia)
- Grevillea banksii -grew fast, off to in-laws' - stolen (!?) would you believe?)
- Grevillea "Carpet Queen" (RIP - not sure why but died during hot weather)
- Grevillea laurifolia(RIP - grew well, flowered, then died over summer)
- Grevillea quercifolia (RIP due to graft failure - grafted;grew steadily, then died - stock sent up new shoots)
- Grevillea scortechinii(RIP - was pulled out 3 times by children, but never had new growth really)
- Grevillea speciosa(RIP) (tube stock, in pot. Took a long while but starting to grow, gone to inlaws' - done in by lawnmower)
- Grevillea "Sylvia" (flowers almost all year, bit yellow at times)
- Grevillea venusta(growing quickly)
- Hakea archaeoides(from seed, 5 from 6 germinated within 2 weeks, also 5 tubestock all OK, quite hardy this, grows fast with water. 2m tall after 18 months in ground)
- Hakea bakeriana(growing vigorously, also planted 2 seeds..1 germinated after summer. vulnerable to wind. Seems to have levelled out at about 1.5m)
- Hakea constablei(1 out of 5 seeds germinated after 2-3 weeks)
- Hakea gibbosa(in pot, OK. Survived being wrenched out of pot by toddler and bare-rooted, gone to in-laws')
- Hakea laurina(growing rapidly, but vulnerable to wind)
- Hakea lorea(3 out of 5 seeds germinated after 2-3 weeks)
- Hakea macraeana(8 or so seeds germinated after 2-3 weeks)
- Hakea platysperma(both seeds germinated with giant but fragile cotyledons after 2-3 weeks, fell prey to toddler)
- Hakea sericea(grows really easily)
- Hakea trineura(2 out of 5 seeds germinated after 2-3 weeks)
- Hardenbergia violacea(growing steadily, flowers in 1st spring after being tubestock)
- Hibbertia serpyllifolia(growing slowly, not thriving for some reason)
- Indigofera australis (x2 tubestock, in part shade - better in part clay than sand)
- Isopogon anemonifolius "Woorikee 2000" (growing steadily, lots of flowers each winter)
- Isopogon anethifolius(growing steadily, no flowers though)
- Jasminum suavissimum (starting to grow well after 9 months)
- Kennedia microphylla(RIP)(growing steadily, now straggly - too dry)
- Kennedia nigricans(RIP) (liked water, flowered, then all eaten by 1 caterpillar)
- Kennedia rubicunda(accelerating...requires close watching, flowering, lots of seedpods)
- Lambertia formosa(Sensitive to phosphorus. Took a long time (9 months?) to start growing but looks OK now in 75% shade; a seed germinated in about 12 days using the paper towelling method)
- Lomandra longifolia(growing OK)
- Lomatia silaifolia (RIP - new growth, then went black and died in late summer)
- Myoporum parvifolium(growing well - good at smothering weeds)
- Nauclea orientalis (Leichhardt tree, grew fast, planted out at in-laws')
- Pandorea pandorana "Golden Showers" (nice show of flowers)
- Pandorea pandorana -normal variety, growing steadily
- Pimelea ferruginea (x2) (1 died suddenly in hot spell, other fine and a few flowers, though somewhat leggy - possibly in too shady spot. Flowering period annoyingly brief)
- Pimelea linifolia (planted several tubestock in well rained area; somewhat delicate but growing OK. Long flowering season, over some months)
- Pratia puberula(took several months to settle in but spreading nicely now)
- Prostanthera incisa(flowered)
- Rulingia hermannifolia (taking off)
- Telopea speciosissima(RIP during hot spell)
- Telopea "white" (growth very seasonal - none in winter, flowered in 2nd season)
- Themeda australis(growing OK)
- Viola hederacea "Baby Blue" (RIP - dried out)
- Viola hederacea "White Glory" (starting to spread, lacks balls really)

- Pyrostegia venusta - Orange Trumpet Vine (just planted, knocked about a lot but new growth finally after whole plant went brown, now regrowing)
